7 Unique Cakes That Taste As Good As They Look

Whole-sized bakes made extra special, for all kinds of occasions.

By Chris Ong        25 February 2022

You never need a reason to have cake. For a whole cake? Well, maybe.

But, there are reasons aplenty: birthdays, anniversaries, festive holiday parties, or just because (yup, it’s a legit reason in our eyes). Plus, there’s still almost a whole year ahead, for you and your fellow cake-aholics to stuff yourselves silly with any number of full-sized confections (only 6 inches and above qualify).

We give you 7 more reasons to make space in your dessert tummy, with these eye-catching and tasty whole cakes.

Gravity Defying Pouring Beer Can Cake, from $148

This one, really takes the cake. It’s beer-themed (so it’s suited for your drinking buddies); designed to look strikingly like blue Tiger Beer lager cans; and comes with an actual floating beer can! Mind blown.

Plus, you can customise this buttercream foam creation in different sizes and with different flavours – choose Uji Matcha Passionfruit or Vanilla Osmanthus Oolong to make this “magical” concoction even more out there!

Musang Fury Durian Basque Burnt Cheesecake, $72.90

This is for those who have strong tastes and even stronger taste buds. Even if it isn’t durian season, you can still have the king of fruits (and your cake) and eat it.

Why we regard this halal-certified baked good as one for the brave ones: It’s crafted with creamy “aromatic” premium Mao Shan Wang durian pulp and rich quality cream cheese, and is burnt on the outside for a caramelised flavour (hence, its browned exterior). A bittersweet indulgence to make your celebratory moments (smell) even more memorable.

Purple Valentine cake, $55.90

Valentine’s Day may be over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat your sweetheart to a sweet treat on any other day.

Make the treat a glossy heart. It’s actually a 6-inch chocolate-flavoured cake, shaped into a luscious-looking purple heart and sprinkled with some rose bud garnishing. Top it up with some of your romantic feels to perfect this prezzie for the love of your life.

Purple Sweet Potato Cake, $63

Here’s another pinkish-purply delight to, well, delight your senses.

The February Special of local bakery Edith Patisserie is a fluffy sponge confection that’s naturally coloured with purple sweet potato powder, layered with creamy sweet potato chantilly cream and stuffed with chunks of steamed yellow sweet potatoes. Pretty (and) yummy if you ask us.

The Gentleman’s Cake, $180

Is it the blue and white colours? The sculptural formation? Or, that it looks like it has got rocks, fruits, minerals and what have you making up this edible art?

We aren’t quite sure why this is called “The Gentleman’s Cake” (it hails from the Men’s Collection), but this abstract piece from the 7-year-young Cupplets (known for its super creative creations) is really a 6-inch drip block cake decorated with chocolate sail and sugar crystal disguised as an artistic work.

Choose from less obvious flavours such as lychee and rose, elderflower, or earl grey to provoke more thought and surprise among your guests.

Baileys Irish Cream Cheesecake, from $105

There’s less need for alcohol when you’ve got this decadent sweet course served up.

What’s in this: baked cheesecake, Oreo cookie crust, chocolate ganache, cocoa dust, Oreo cookie bits and gold leaves. Oh, and not to forget, Baileys Irish Cream liquer and Baileys fresh cream (for all you sweet-toothed tipplers). Plus, it goes up to a huge 14-inch monstrous round that serves up to 70 peeps for a cool $525 if you ever need one in the future.

Pink Guava & Pear cake, from $58

Tigerlily Patisserie’s still white-hot right now with the hipsters and cafe lovers, so it’s only apt to feature a goodie from the buzzy baking biz started by lauded pastry chef Maxine Ngooi.

Our star pick’s this terrazzo-like, exotic-flavoured Insta-worthy dessert. The official description: “Pink guava cream and jelly, with cubed fresh pears, encased in elderflower liquer pear mousse with a decoration of edible shapes”. Our informal response: Yum. ’Nuff said.
