Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Out 18 Mar, HBO Go
Stars: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot
Four years after the original Justice League movie flopped, this new version – also known as the Snyder Cut – arrives as the fully realised vision of writer-director Zack Snyder. At four hours long, twice the running time of the original, the story picks up after the death of Superman (Cavill) in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), with Batman (Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gadot) forming the Justice League of superheroes to save the world from destruction.
Zack Snyder: Comic Book Hero
The American director is known for his loud and glossy comic-book movies.
Zack Snyder may forever be associated with arguably his most popular films, 300 (2006) and Watchmen (2009), and the signature visual style of those movies.
You can tell from his work as a director, producer and writer, which would later include Sucker Punch, Man of Steel, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman, that he has a passion for comic books and often remains faithful to the source material when bringing it to life.
Scenes from Snyder films tend to look like they’ve been ripped from the pages, and the 54-year-old is known for his bold use of colour and reluctance for frequent cuts. He also shoots vivid and exciting action scenes like nobody else, by manipulating speed (slow and fast motion) and picking spots to zoom in and out quickly.
His 2017 comic-book epic, Justice League, was panned after he left the project-in-progress following a personal tragedy — the death of his daughter. Offered the chance to remake the movie as he had intended, Zack Snyder’s Justice League will soon be streaming online.
Snyder will also be bringing a new zombie heist film, Army of the Dead, out on Netflix later this year. The film stars Dave Bautista (Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy) and Snyder is already developing a prequel and related anime series.
