Get ready to soar into the Year of the Dragon with SAFRA.

By Mandy Lim Beitler        19 January 2024

With an exciting variety of activities happening at all seven SAFRA clubs this Lunar New Year (LNY), there’s something for you, your buddies, and your loved ones of all ages. Here are all the best highlights you don’t want to miss!

Lion & Dragon Dance Spectacular

Lion dance and dragon dance

No celebration would be complete without the lively spectacle of lion and dragon dances. Accompanied by the vigorous beating of drums and clashing of cymbals, the agile bounding lions and sinuous dragons weaving through the air are always a crowd favourite. Look out for them at these locations:

  • 27 January: SAFRA Punggol (10am), SAFRA Mount Faber (11am), SAFRA Choa Chu Kang (1pm), SAFRA Jurong (2pm)
  • 28 January: SAFRA Toa Payoh (11am), SAFRA Tampines (12pm)
  • 3 February: SAFRA Yishun (10am)

While you’re there, take a sneak peek at what’s in store for you in the coming year with the zodiac forecast courtesy of Way Fengshui Group’s Grand Master Tan Khoon Yong. But don’t worry if you can’t make it on those days because the displays will stay up till 25 February.

Wishing you were as flexible as those dragons? Sign up with Real Yoga at SAFRA Mount Faber and limber up! From 27 January till 25 February, SAFRA members pay just $250 for a 10-session package and get two sessions free. Find out more at safra.sg/promotions/lunar-bliss-real-yoga

Catch live performances

‘The Four Dragons’, a theatrical showcase by Act 3 International

Fascinated by the skill of face-changing in Sichuan opera? Then don’t miss these mind-boggling acts at SAFRA Tampines and SAFRA Toa Payoh. Alternatively, head to SAFRA Jurong and let a juggling duo and a ventriloquist amaze you with their contemporary talents.

Or go on an adventure with ‘The Four Dragons’ – a theatrical showcase by Act 3 International (above) at SAFRA Punggol (27 January) and SAFRA Yishun (3 February) – as they defy the gods to save villagers in a drought-stricken land.

And if you and your child have always wanted to try acting, pre-register for the parent-child drama workshop at SAFRA Yishun on 3 February. Spots are limited, so register via m.safra.sg or the SAFRA mobile app now!

All the excitement tiring you out? Then make an appointment to pamper yourself at Masego The Safari Spa at SAFRA Jurong. Enjoy special LNY rates on signature treatments till 29 February; more info at safra.sg/promotions/lunar-new-year-special-promotion-at-masego-the-safari-spa

Explore festive booths

Chinese New Year calligraphy and lantern riddles

You can also look forward to checking out a selection of festive booths at the clubs. Those with a sweet tooth, look out for the booths offering various old-school treats such as dragon beard candy and muah chee at all the SAFRA clubs.

Over at SAFRA Toa Payoh, challenge yourself to lantern riddles and then have a master inscribe auspicious phrases in Chinese calligraphy that you can adorn your home with. There’ll also be Chinese calligraphy to admire at SAFRA Yishun, SAFRA Tampines, SAFRA Mount Faber and SAFRA Jurong.

For more sweet treats, head to 929 Dessert & Bites at SAFRA Tampines for bingsu, waffles and ice cream. From now till 8 February, all customers enjoy 50% off your second item; more info at safra.sg/promotions/929-desserts-cny-2024-promotion

Hands-on craft workshops

Soap making and candle making at SAFRA Choa Chu Kang

How about learning to make something neat to show off when your relatives and friends come a-visiting? There are plenty of LNY-themed craft workshops to choose from, such as those at SAFRA Choa Chu Kang on 27 January. You can design the cutest dragon-shaped soap infused with essential oils, or craft a candle in a charming persimmon-shaped vessel. Over at SAFRA Mount Faber, SAFRA members get to dabble in the mesmerising art of marbling on a fabric fan.

Looking to let your kids try out a new art form this year? Sign them up for free trial dance classes on 3 and 4 February at Firstpointe SAFRA Choa Chu Kang; more info at safra.sg/promotions/firstpointe-lunar-new-year-free-trial-weekend

Discover a Dragon Turtle hybrid

SAFRA Dragon Turtle art installation

This LNY season, head to SAFRA Punggol or SAFRA Yishun to meet the auspicious Dragon Turtle! Part of the arts@SAFRA initiative supported by the National Arts Council, this hybrid creature symbolises peace and stability, good health and longevity, success and fertility, and of course, an abundance of luck.

The installation’s creator, eco-designer Didier Ng, will be conducting workshops at SAFRA Punggol on 27 January (free and open to all) and at SAFRA Yishun on 3 February (free for SAFRA members, $5 for guests).  Join her in making baby turtles using bottle caps and other recycled materials — your creation will then be added to complete the Dragon Turtle installation!
