It’s time to prep.
The 2021 SAFRA Singapore Bay Run & Army Half Marathon is back this November as a virtual event. If you haven’t already, sign up here, stat!
While we trust that you might know how or what to do health- and fitness-wise to train for the run (if you don’t, you can start by clicking here), you might be less fussed or clued up about what to wear or pack along.
Don’t worry, here’s our shortlist of recommended gear (to go with our curated selection of shoes here) to help you be a winner – in both the performance and style stakes.
Watch: Commando Raider 3320 Series (3337), $740, Luminox
Yes, running is about performance, but it’s also about the aesthetic; this vibrant green looker’s bound to have the other runners keep a, ahem, watch out for you.
Though it may not be all that great for professional marathoners since it is an analog timepiece, (that’s still very precise, mind), it’s good for your practice runs. Why? ’Cos it’s tough yet lightweight, (it’s made of CARBONOX, the brand’s carbon compound material, and rubber); super water-resistant (no sweat about your body sweat and the rain); and highly legible and luminous (sand-coloured dial contrasting with bright green).
Available at Luminox website and various brand stockists, multiple locations, www.luminox.com.sg
Cap: AeroBill Tailwind, $35, Nike
It’s refreshing to feel the breeze in your hair as you fly fleet-footed into the wind; not so great when it’s hair all over the place and perspiration all over your face.
Keep yourself looking collected with this black cap. Carefully placed 3D-heat-mapped laser perforations on its front and side panels allow for maximum breathability, and an ultra convenient adjustable closure lets you customise the fits with just one hand, with Nike’s AeroBill tech providing moisture-wicking comfort. So cool, so spiffy!
Shorts: AeroSwift Women’s Tight Running Shorts, $75, and Dri-FIT Flex Stride Men’s Trail Shorts, $79, Nike
You may get a nice running tee as part of the runners’ entitlements when you sign up for the SSBR and AHM runs, but you still do need an equally nice pair of bottoms to go with it. Here are our sporty sartorial picks to let you stride out in style.
For the ladies, the super stretchy and streamlined Nike AeroSwift shorts in pale coral/black/white. It hugs the body due to its lightweight polyester and elastane fabric, yet keeps one cool with its sweat-wicking tech.
For the lads, the striking Nike Flex Stride shorts in any of its Signal Blue, Moon Fossil or Dark Purple Dust colour schemes, is the one you want to be seen in. It’s got perforations in the back panel for breathability; is made of flexible Dri-FIT polyester fabric so you’re kept comfy and dry; and features 5 utility pockets to stash all your necessities (think snacks, towelettes, and more snacks).

Extra Fuel: Lipo6 Keto goFAT Gel (30ml), $1, Nutrex
While we don’t expect you to be packing this on your run (you can though if you’re training with a small backpack or waist pouch, or have someone welcoming you at the finishing line with this in hand), it could end up being one of your most-wanted items before or after a run.
Basically, it’s a gel that serves as energy fuel for your marathon and your keto diet. Concocted to meet ketogenic nutritional needs, it makes a portable and affordable on-the-go snack that’s made of medium chain triglyceride (MCT) powder, avocado powder, natural caffeine and L-carnitine. Just don’t imbibe too much just because it’s a delicious acai flavour.
Available at The Supplement Warehouse (TSW), 13, Lorong 8 Toa Payoh, Braddell Tech, #07-04, 319261, https://tsw.com.sg
BONUS: SAFRA members enjoys 10% off store-wide at TSW. Click here for more information.
