AIRSIMe

Gone are the days when you had to buy physical SIM cards at every destination, especially with the advent of e-sims. One app you can purchase e-sims on is AIRSIMe, which offers 4G data in 100+ destinations such as Japan (from $1.67/day), Korea (from $1.67/day), and Indonesia (from $2/day).

Those who are travelling to multiple destinations can also choose the combo packages such as Australia & New Zealand (From $1.71/day), Europe 34 Countries (from $2.57/day), and China & Hong Kong (from $3/day). That way, you can catch some well-deserved rest on the flight even when the cabin is too noisy.

The earphones will be your companion even for long-haul flights, as you can get up to 40 hours of playback, including 10 hours in the earbuds and 30 hours in the case. Plus, it also charges wirelessly.

The JBL Live Pro 2 TWS comes in 4 different colours – white, black, navy blue, and pink – and you can purchase it on See Hear Live’s website.

4. Tile Mate Bluetooth tracker

Tile Mate Bluetooth tracker

Here’s a travel hack: Attach a bluetooth tracker to your luggage if you’re checking it in. That way, in the rare occurrence the airline loses your luggage, you’ll be able to track it down.

The Tile Mate Bluetooth Tracker is a versatile tracker you can attach to your keys, backpacks, or luggage. All you need to do is download the free app and use the two different modes, Find Nearby, which uses the Tile app to ring your Tile when it’s within Bluetooth range; or Find Far Away, which allows you to view your Tile’s most recent location on a map.

It’s available for $34.99 on Metapod, which allows you to purchase via Atome.

If you’re a first-time Atome user, you’ll be glad to know that SAFRA members enjoy 20% off with the code “ATOME20OFF”. For more information, visit safra.sg/promotions/atome

8 More Smart Travel Tips To Save Money On Your Next Holiday https://nsman.safra.sg/8-more-smart-travel-tips-to-save-money-on-your-next-holiday/ Fri, 19 Apr 2024 06:00:43 +0000 https://nsman.safra.sg/?p=26321 Spend less on accommodation, food, sightseeing and more with these tips and deals.

The post 8 More Smart Travel Tips To Save Money On Your Next Holiday appeared first on eNSMAN.

]]>

Travelling isn’t getting any cheaper, but going on an overseas break shouldn’t burn a hole in your pocket. From accommodation and sightseeing to meals and transport, there are many ways to keep your expenses way down. Of course, you may need to spend a little time researching deals and comparing costs, but if it’ll save you money then it’s totally worth it. And, as you’ll soon realise, travelling on the cheap needn’t mean forgoing activities and experiences, flying budget airlines, eating convenience food, or staying in a dodgy hotel.

Here are eight tips for making your next holiday a more affordable – and memorable – one.

1. Shop your holiday wardrobe for less

Shop your holiday wardrobe for less

Whether you’re looking for winter clothing, beachwear or luggage, you can save a bundle by shopping ahead of time. This gives you the chance to compare prices and scope out the various sales around town.

If you prefer to shop from home, check out online stores like Zalora, a one-stop shop for men’s, women’s and children’s wear and accessories.

SAFRA members and 11B holders enjoy 10% off their purchase with a minimum spend of $180. Use the promo code SAFRAZAL10. You can also get 5% cash back on your purchases. For more information, go to safra.sg/promotions/Zalora24

2. Know when to book and go

Booking air tickets online

Don’t wait till the last minute to confirm your airline tickets. If you want a good deal, book them about three months in advance. According to Expedia, Sunday is also the cheapest day to purchase your tickets, while Friday is the most expensive.

Take the time to compare prices between different airlines and across different travel websites so that you get the best deal. Do also check out newly launched airlines or low-cost carriers that offer discounted tickets to popular destinations.

To save even more money, remember to use your loyalty or frequent flyer points. You can also set up fare alerts to search for cheaper flights.

You should also research the best times to travel to a particular destination. For example, avoid going to China during Golden Week, an extended holiday when many businesses are closed as locals travel home.

3. Save on accommodation

Book an apartment to save on accommodation

If you’re travelling with a group, it might be cheaper to book an apartment rather than multiple hotel rooms. Be sure to compare different areas, because neighbourhoods that are further away from the city and tourist attractions tend to be more affordable. If you decide to stay in a hotel, find out if you can use your frequent flyer points to offset some of the charges, or ask the hotel if they have any promotions or deals, such as “kids stay free” or “book five nights, pay for four”.

SAFRA members can get 8% off their accommodation with online travel booking platform Agoda, which has over 2 million properties worldwide. For more information and to book, go to safra.sg/promotions/agoda

Check out more family travel tips to ensure that everyone has a good time!

4. Shop like a local

Shop like a local to save money

Buying souvenirs, travel essentials and personal care items? Don’t go to shops in popular tourist areas to avoid paying more than you need to. Instead, find out where the locals shop and make a beeline for those stores. And look out for locally made souvenirs and products rather than imported ones.

If you’re buying fruit and vegetables, try the farmers’ markets which sell fresh, seasonal produce, and for bread and pastries, visit the local bakeries.

5. Explore free tourist attractions

Explore free tourist attractions

Not all tourist attractions charge an admission fee. Certain landmarks, art installations, and famous parks and gardens are free to visit. Some museums and art galleries also have “free admission” days (check their websites). And don’t skip the local architecture – historical churches and other heritage or well-preserved buildings are often free to explore, too.

6. Buy travel data at home

Buy travel data at home

Mobile data is essential for accessing maps and public transport schedules, finding places to eat, and using social media while you’re on holiday. But if you’re not in a Wi-Fi hotspot, you’ll have to pay data roaming charges, which can be expensive. Make things easier and cheaper for yourself by purchasing the AIRSIM prepaid travel data SIM card before you leave home.

AIRSIM is a prepaid travel data SIM card that can be used in more than 130 countries outside of Singapore. AIRSIM works with mobile operators around the world to provide you with mobile data service at local data rates. Using Over-The-Air (OTA) technology, your AIRSIM is transformed into a local SIM at the destination.

AIRSIM is reusable – just purchase a suitable data plan before travelling to your next destination by using the AIRSIM app or website, and you can enjoy immediate mobile data service upon your arrival at different destinations using the same SIM card.

SAFRA members, get 15% off your AIRSIM Prepaid Card using the promo code SAFRA15. Go to safra.sg/promotions/airsim for details.

7. Explore on foot or use public transport

Explore on foot or use public transport

Having your own vehicle might be handy, but you don’t really need one if your holiday destination is conducive to walking or has a reliable public transport system. You won’t just save on car rental costs but on petrol and parking fees, too.

If you plan to walk for most of your trip, invest in comfortable walking shoes. The Crocs range protects your feet while looking stylish.

SAFRA members and 11B holders get 20% off their Crocs purchases (minimum $120 spend on regular-priced footwear and charms). Find out more at safra.sg/promotions/crocs

8. Have picnics

Have picnics while on holiday

Eating out every day may not be an option for you, and, even if your holiday rental has a fully equipped kitchen, cooking may not be your idea of fun. The next best way to save money on food is by having a picnic. Buy sandwich fixings, fruit and snacks at the local market or grocery store and pick a scenic picnic spot. Beaches, parks and gardens are all good places to relax and enjoy your meal, plus, they’re perfect for people-watching and taking in the surrounding sights. Be sure to check that picnicking is allowed at the spot you choose.

Who doesn’t love to travel? But sadly, not all of us can afford to trot the globe whenever we wish. While you’re saving up for that big romantic gesture overseas, these travel-in-situ date ideas should help satisfy your wanderlust in any season.

Pretend you’re in Japan at this secret scenic spot

Singapore Quarry
Photos: NParks

Okay, it’s not really a secret, but Singapore Quarry is arguably one of the ‘roads less travelled by’, as poet Robert Frost once opined. You’re probably familiar with Little Guilin at Bukit Batok Town Park or the disused quarries on Pulau Ubin, but are you aware of this one within Dairy Farm Nature Park in Bukit Timah?

Just a five-minute walk from Rail Mall, this former granite quarry surrounded by lush greenery is ideal for a romantic date. Between the imposing cliffs and the picturesque oasis, it’s easy to imagine yourselves in more exotic locales beyond our shores. Walk hand in hand on the wooden deck and capture stunning shots for the ‘gram. You might even spot gorgeous birds and wildlife along the way.

Does the lake look really inviting? Don’t jump in! Get your splash on at Wild Wild Wet instead, because SAFRA members enjoy 10% off Day Passes. Find out more at safra.sg/promotions/wild-wild-wet

Eat your way through Taiwan’s night markets in Singapore

Taiwan’s night markets in Singapore

According to Skyscanner’s 2024 Travel Trends report, Taipei ranks third on the top 10 destinations for Singapore travellers with the biggest year-on-year increase in searches. But if rising inflation means it’ll be a while before you can visit its iconic night markets, don’t fret. Take your beloved to TaiWan Night Markets at Cineleisure instead.

Presenting the highlights of Taiwanese street food culture, it’s a foodcourt where you get to satisfy all your cravings under one roof. And you don’t even have to wait till the evening. Fill up on oyster mee sua and Taiwanese sausage with sticky rice. Or snack on scallion pancakes and QQ sweet potato balls. Don’t miss the famous Super Nutritious Sandwich and Taipei Bridge Oil Rice too!

Need a Taiwanese bubble tea fix? Then you’ll be glad to know that SAFRA members enjoy 5% off at most Gong Cha outlets. Find out more at safra.sg/promotions/gongcha

Tour a farm like in Italy or New Zealand

Open Farm Community farm tours

It’s no surprise that city slickers like us look for farmstays when we travel. After all, how else are we supposed to learn to appreciate where our food comes from? But as appealing as thoughts of harvesting olives or plucking grapes are, such idyllic trips can cost a fair penny. Thankfully, an affordable alternative awaits at Singapore’s very first sustainable urban farm.

Open Farm Community conducts farm tours on most Fridays and Saturdays. Each tour takes just about 30 minutes, after which you can savour some of the produce you encounter. The true farm-to-table dining experience is not only meaningful, but is also a multi-sensorial one, where you get to touch, smell and taste homegrown herbs and vegetables.

For the most options, head to their newest outlet at 73 Haji Lane, which boasts tons of props and nine photobooths over two levels. You can even recreate elevator scenes from your favourite K-drama. Gaze at the galaxy at the Andromeda Observatory

Andromeda Observatory, Woodlands Galaxy CC

Extra-terrestrial leisure travel may be out of reach for mere mortals for now, but don’t let that stop you from exploring outer space from a distance. You may be familiar with Science Centre Singapore’s observatory, but did you know that there’s one in Woodlands too? In fact, Woodlands Galaxy CC is home to the second largest telescope in Singapore.

For just $1 per person, you can visit the Andromeda Observatory on Friday nights from 7.30 to 9.30 pm, barring inclement weather. There, you can peer through the 3000 mm telescope and see if you can identify the Milky Way or each other’s astrological sign. It doesn’t get much more romantic than that, surely.

Go back in time with a movie under the stars

This initiative by *SCAPE takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 7:30pm at the Somerset Youth Park, and it’s not only free, but even includes free popcorn and ice cream!

Old & New Johor Bahru – Where To Eat, Shop & Stay https://nsman.safra.sg/old-new-johor-bahru-where-to-eat-shop-stay/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 04:00:51 +0000 https://nsman.safra.sg/?p=26008 The perfect location for a quick weekend getaway.

The post Old & New Johor Bahru – Where To Eat, Shop & Stay appeared first on eNSMAN.

]]>

“Turn left on Jalan Trust,” chirped the car GPS cheerily. “Trust! Apa trust lah! Jalan TRUS! T-R-U-S!” barked our Grab driver grumpily.

My travel buddy and I laughed in the back seat. Such is the charm of Johor Bahru – it may have advanced rapidly over the past few years, but clearly, some parts of it still stick to what works – the old-school way of getting things done.

NSMan was recently invited for a stay at Holiday Inn Johor Bahru City Centre (Holiday Inn JBCC). Not only did we get the chance to enjoy the comforts of a fairly new hotel (it opened in 2020), we managed to squeeze in a little food safari (of mostly old-school joints) in our couple of days there. But more on the food later.

Getting to Holiday Inn JBCC

The hotel is situated in an extremely convenient spot right next to the JB checkpoint, about 20 minutes’ drive (traffic jams notwithstanding) from the Singapore Woodlands checkpoint. There’s even a bridge from the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex connecting directly to the hotel. It came as no surprise when we found out that almost 90 per cent of the hotel’s guests come from Singapore, which mostly comprise families with children.

If you’re not up to driving, catch one of the cross-border bus services (Causeway Link, Grab Bus, SBS Transit, SMRT, etc.), or a taxi from Queen Street taxi terminal. You can also hire a private car from licensed cross-border taxi services. Alternatively, avoid the notorious Causeway traffic by taking a KTMB train from Woodlands, which will get you to JB Sentral in a mere five minutes.

Staying at Holiday Inn JBCC

Holiday Inn JBCC King Room

As mentioned earlier, the hotel feels fresh and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the room letting in plenty of natural light, details like both “soft” and “firm” labelled pillows on the bed, and full-sized Dove toiletries in the bathroom – we do detest fiddling with finicky little shampoo bottles. There’s also high-speed WiFi, and USB charging ports by the bedside – essential tools for every digital nomad – or weekend vacationer who may feel like binging on a K-drama series or movie, and a small round table for dining or working.

Holiday Inn JBCC gym

And if youre one of those who simply cannot skip a gym workout even on holiday, youll love the gym which has the same floor-to-ceiling windows, and panoramic views that include the CIQ complex (we were fascinated by the long lines of motorcycles). Cool off after your workout by jumping into the rooftop swimming pool thats just up a short flight of stairs from the gym.

Breakfast the next morning was at the hotels restaurant, Dine@EIGHT, where we were spoilt for choice with a huge spread of Asian and Western favourites such as nasi lemak, a DIY noodle station, freshly made pancakes and waffles, pastries, and more. There are also live stations serving up roti canai and eggs made to order.

Holiday Inn JBCC Dine@EIGHT kids' corner

There’s a kids’ corner within the restaurant to keep the little ones busy while parents enjoy their breakfast with a cuppa or teh tarik. And as kids dine free at Holiday Inn JBCC, any time you order from the main menu, your children’s meals are on the house.

Holiday Inn JB CC Starbucks

Speaking of cuppas, and if youre a caffeine fiend, youll be glad to know that Holiday Inn JBCC is the first hotel in JB to have its very own in-house Starbucks. Whether youre in the mood for an Americano, Caramel Frappuccino or a Cafe Latte, pop down to the Lobby Lounge for your fix. It’s also available via in-room dining 24 hours a day.

Shop till you drop – then shop some more

Johor Bahru City Square
Photo: SPH Media Trust

HIJBCC shares the same multi-use complex as the Komtar JBCC shopping mall, and there’s even a shortcut from Level 7 of the hotel. Noteworthy shops here include a Brands Outlet, Marks and Spencer and Sephora. “We also have some of those shops in Singapore,” you might say, but thanks to the favourable exchange rate, you may be able to snag some bargains.

Johor Bahru City Square
Photo: SPH Media Trust

Right across the street from the hotel (and also connected via the link bridge mentioned earlier) is Johor Bahru City Square, an even bigger mall with the likes of Uniqlo and Malaysian fashion brands Padini and Vincci. Shop, eat (we couldn’t resist multiple servings of Boost juices at Malaysian prices), drop your shopping at the hotel, and shop some more!

Now, on to the food!

Banana cake at Hiap Joo Bakery

Hiap Joo Bakery JB

From the hotel, it’s a five-minute Grab ride to Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, where many popular food places are located. The 100-year old Hiap Joo Bakery is no secret among tourists – it’s said to sell the best banana cake in JB (and some say, the whole of Malaysia). We went expecting an hour-long queue, but our greed (we had decided to go for a late lunch at Restoran Hua Mui first – more on that later) actually paid off – there was nary a customer in sight when we approached the shop window at close to 4pm. We wouldn’t advise going that late, however; we just got lucky that day.

RM12/about S$3.70 gets you 10 decent-sized slices in a sturdy plastic box – kudos for this improved packaging over the previous cardboard box, which can hold up to stacking of 10 boxes or more in your car trunk. Trust us, you’d want to buy more than one box. The confection is perfectly moist but not too much so; is deeply flavoured with fresh banana, not artificial flavouring; and is firm to the bite, yet melts in your mouth. You’ll have to try it for yourself to figure out what that means.

Where: 13 Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Opening hours: 7:30am to 4:30pm (Mon to Sat, while stocks last)
Tel: +60 7-223 1703

Chicken cutlet at Restoran Hua Mui

Restoran Hua Mui JB upstairs

Down the road from Hiap Joo Bakery is Restoran Hua Mui. Rustic doesn’t begin to describe this eatery; the stairs leading to the upstairs dining area are steep and potentially slippery (we suggest you hold on to the railing for dear life) but we strongly recommend sitting upstairs. It’s non air-conditioned and you may get a couple of birds flying in while you dine, but the laid-back, kampung ambience can’t be beat.

Restoran Hua Mui JB chicken cutlet sandwichOrder up the Fried Chicken Cutlet with fries, or in a sandwich (RM8.90), and you won’t regret it – the chicken is juicy and the batter, light and crunchy without being greasy. There’s a wide variety of “zi char” dishes and hawker favourites if you prefer – stir fried “ee mee” (RM9.90), Hainanese mutton soup (RM26.90) and fish & chips (RM25.90) are all in the “Top 10” menu selection. Wash it all down with an icy teh peng (RM4.10) to beat the heat, accompanied by traditional kaya toast (RM3.70) with thick slabs of butter for dessert.

Where: 131, Jalan Trus, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Opening hours: 8:30am to 5pm daily
Tel: +60 7-224 7364

Kway teow kia at Restoran Hi Wan

Holiday Inn JBCC gym - Restoran Hi Wan kway teow kia

Dinner at Restoran Hi Wan, which serves kway teow kia, was recommended by a Johorean friend. Its a 10-minute drive or Grab ride from Holiday Inn JBCC.

Kway teow kia is like kway chaps cuter, more delicate cousin – its still white rice noodles, but in thinner and smoother strands. The noodles are served in a lightly herbal and peppery broth thats very more-ish. To go with it, we picked braised pork belly, tongue, intestines, pig trotters, bean curd and kiam chye (side dishes from RM1.50). A must-have is the crunchy ngoh hiang (five spice meat rolls), which is not a typical kway chap accompaniment in Singapore. All the pork and offal was well-braised and tender, on the light tasting side with no hint of odour. The chilli sauce is a must here – its tangy, slightly sweet and goes perfectly with all the dishes. Be prepared to have multiple bowls of kway teow kia to go with all the side dishes you will inevitably over-order. Going in a large group is recommended!

Where: 210 Jalan Sri Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Opening hours: 3.30pm to 2:00am (Mon to Sun)
Tel: +60 16-930 8981

Massage at Bangkok Spa

Bangkok Spa in JB

We managed to squeeze in a quick foot reflexology session on one of our evenings in JB, at a spa recommended by the same Johorean friend.

There’s no point trying to keep where you’re going a secret when trying to get to Bangkok Spa. At first happy to find out that they provided free return transport from your chosen pick-up point, we were amused and slightly embarrassed by the van that turned up, which was not-too-subtly emblazoned with the spa’s logo and images.

Bangkok Spa JB van

Nevertheless, service was stellar, with foot massages from RM66 and body massages starting from RM90. It’s best to book in advance via WhatsApp for your preferred timeslot, as it gets really busy here.

Family holidays make for great memories, but planning them can sometimes be a challenge. If you have little ones, you’ll want to make sure that there’s never a dull moment, but at the same time, kids need their downtime, too. Travelling with elderly relatives can also be tricky, especially if they prefer a slow and relaxed pace.

But there are ways to keep everyone – yourself included – happy. Here are seven tips to get started.

1. Pick a destination that suits everyone

Travel Tips -Pick a destination that suits everyone

It’s probably not hard to pick a destination that everyone will love, but if you have little kids and elderly parents or in-laws in tow, you’ll want to select a place that’s easy to get around or has a reliable public transport system (particularly if you don’t intend to rent a car), that has medical facilities, restaurants and other services and facilities you may need, and where the weather isn’t too extreme (which is important if you’re travelling with a baby or a frail or sickly elderly family member).

Also ask yourself if the destination is convenient to get to (will you need to transit for several hours or endure an excruciatingly long flight?) and if it suits your budget, since some cities can be quite expensive.

2. Pack smart

Travel Tips - Pack smart

Don’t pack everything you think you’ll need. Most people tend to overpack, so make a list of what you intend to bring and then see where you can trim it down. If there are laundry facilities where you’ll be, simply do a wash every couple of days so that you don’t have to pack multiple outfits. And there’s probably no need to bring toiletries like shampoo, conditioner and body wash with you if you can purchase them at your destination or get them from your hotel.

If you’re travelling to a cold, wintry destination, you will have to pack extra items like scarves, thick socks and jackets. To save space in your luggage, stash these in vacuum-sealed bags first.

Packing cubes will also help keep your belongings neat and organised, plus they help to save space.

If you’re travelling with a couple of children, you might be able to fit all of their clothes, shoes and other essentials into one standard suitcase.

3. Keep the little ones occupied

Travel Tips - Keep the little ones occupied

Make sure that your children will have enough activities, experiences and attractions to fill their time with. Ask them for their preferences and do some research beforehand so that you can plan your itinerary.

Older kids may prefer amusement or theme parks or historical sites, while the younger ones may want to visit an interactive museum or nature park. The city or country you select should offer a range of activities and attractions that appeal to kids of all ages.

To prevent boredom back in the hotel room, pack colouring books, pencils and sketch pads, or borrow old-school board games from the hotel.

4. Choose family-friendly accommodation

Travel Tips - Choose family-friendly accommodation

Vacation rentals are a good choice for families, because you have the entire house or apartment to yourselves. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, book connecting rooms to keep everyone together, or check if there are family rooms available – these are usually quite spacious and include a few bedrooms with bunk beds, living and dining spaces, and a kitchenette.

Some of the bigger chain hotels offer babysitting and childcare services and even kids’ clubs, in case Mum and Dad need some quiet time.

If travelling with elderly family members who have mobility, hearing or sight issues, remember to book accessible accommodation, which usually has grab rails in the shower, shower seats, height-adjustable handheld shower heads, audible and visual alarms, and so on.

SAFRA members, book your holiday accommodation with Agoda and get 8% off using the promo code SAFRA8. Only applicable to selected accommodations marked “Promo Eligible” in designated destinations. Go to safra.sg/promotions/agoda to learn more.

5. Ensure that everyone is connected

Stay connected with WiFi while travelling

You’ll definitely need WiFi, and a prepaid travel data SIM card like AIRSIM is the way to go.

The AIRSIM card can be used in more than 130 countries outside of Singapore. AIRSIM works with mobile operators around the world to provide you with mobile data service at local data rates. Using Over-The-Air (OTA) technology, your AIRSIM is transformed into a local SIM at your destination.

AIRSIM is reusable – just purchase the suitable data plan before travelling to your next destination by using the AIRSIM app or website to enjoy immediate mobile data service upon your arrival at different destinations using the same SIM card.

No more paying expensive data roaming charges or waiting in line to buy a local SIM card when you’re overseas.

SAFRA members enjoy 15% off the AIRSIM prepaid card using the promo code SAFRA15. To find out more, click on safra.sg/promotions/airsim

6. Select a mix of activities and experiences

Travel Tips - Select a mix of activities and experiences

Not everyone in your travelling party will want to do the same things. Sightseeing might be fun for the adults but not for the kids. And while walking is a great way to explore a destination, your elderly parents or in-laws may find it tiring or difficult.

The best way around this is to fill the itinerary with activities and experiences that everyone in the family can enjoy together – think farm visits, fruit picking, family-friendly musicals and plays, and food tours.

7. Buy travel insurance

Travel tips - Buy travel insurance

It can be nerve-racking to bring your entire family on holiday, and one way to alleviate this is by purchasing travel insurance. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that you and your family members will be taken care of if you lose your luggage, miss a flight, fall sick, or meet with an accident while overseas.

Travelling with children and elderly relatives is even more reason to buy travel insurance.

Purchase AIG Travel Guard so that you can fully enjoy your holiday. SAFRA members enjoy 20% off their purchase of a Single Trip plan. To learn more about this exclusive promotion, click on safra.sg/travelinsurance

1. Gangwon Province, South Korea

Korea Ski Adventure

If you’d like to dance to your very own winter sonata, then a South Korean ski holiday is for you. Gangwon-do boasts world-famous resorts like Mona Yongpyong – often touted as Korea’s Ski Mecca, as well as the Insta-friendly Vivaldi Park Ski World, where trendy folk tackle slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels.

Beyond the adrenaline rush, fill your social media with K-drama scenery on Nami island, adorable alpacas at Alpaca World, and Daewallyeong Farm’s friendly sheep. Bookend your ski adventure with a stop in port city Incheon, famous for historical sites and natural hot springs, as well as world-class shopping, iconic palaces and delicious dining in Seoul.

2. Hokkaido, Japan

Japan Ski Adventure

With an exciting blend of powder snow and cultural immersion, Japan offers a well-rounded winter wonderland escape. Hokkaido, the northernmost island, boasts world-class resorts like Niseko, with vast interconnected slopes and a charming village atmosphere. When the legs need a rest, go on snowmobile or snowtubing adventures instead.

Or warm up with a soak in steaming onsen hot springs – a quintessential Japanese tradition. You can see snow monkeys doing the same at Hakodate’s botanical garden! Other must-dos in Hokkaido include tasting ramen in Asahikawa, strolling along canals in idyllic Otaru, and toasting to a magical vacation at the Sapporo Beer Factory.

3. Harbin, China

Changbaishan, China

The capital city of China’s Heilongjiang province is probably best known for the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. Running from late December to mid-February every year, the spectacular event alone justifies your flight tickets. Of course, while you’re there, venture up – and down – the slopes of majestic Changbai mountains.

From 1996 Asian Winter Games host Yabuli to the family-friendly Wanda Changbaishan International ski resorts, a diverse range of trails, cableways and theme parks are on offer. Afterwards, exploring the fairytale world of Snow Town and cultural gems like the Jilin Manchu Museum will make your Chinese ski holiday even more unforgettable.

4. The Arctic Circle

Finland Northern Lights

Embrace the magic of the Arctic Circle with a true winter adventure in Finland. Learn to ski at Ounasvaara in Rovaniemi, before experiencing Arctic ice floating and trundling along on a reindeer sleigh ride. With long daylight hours extending your playtime, there’s plenty of time to meet Santa Claus, go on a husky safari or join an ice-breaker cruise.

After dark, embark on an Aurora hunting expedition in a snowmobile. In Saariselkä, you can even stay in a luxurious Lappish Kelo-glass igloo and enjoy front-row seats to the celestial light show! Seafood lovers should also consider an excursion about 400 km north of the Arctic Circle to Kirkenes, Norway, which boasts the best king crabs around.

5. New South Wales, Australia

Skiing at Thredbo, Snowy Mountains, Australia

Australia might surprise you as a ski destination, but its Snowy Mountains offer incredible slopes and stunning scenery. Shred the legendary powder at Perisher, the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, where multiple resorts combine for endless runs on diverse terrain. Thrilling descents aside, look forward to a plethora of winter activities.

Gondola rides unveil breathtaking alpine vistas, while snowshoeing lets you explore the hushed beauty of snow-gum forests. Discover the charming après-ski scene in alpine villages like Jindabyne or Thredbo too. Finally, round off your trip to New South Wales exploring Sydney’s iconic sights from Darling Harbour to Bondi Beach.

6. Switzerland

Zermatt Valley and Matterhorn, Switzerland

With pristine glaciers and charming alpine villages, Switzerland is the quintessential ski holiday destination. Carve tracks into the fresh powder in the Zermatt, Saas-Fee or Jungfrau regions. For a change of pace, take a heart-pounding sledge ride down Mount Bussalp, Europe’s longest sledging run, or try tobogganing around scenic Interlaken.

In between, visit traditional Christmas markets, sip steaming mugs of hot chocolate, indulge in an authentic Swiss fondue and soak in the beauty of frozen lakes overlooked by snowcapped peaks. Consider complementing your Swiss trip with pitstops overland to Germany’s Black Forest and the picturesque village of Colmar in France.
