SAFRA Members Can Further Their Studies With No Bond Obligation

Get your Diploma, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from SAFRA’s academic partners with up to 100% of the course fees covered.

By Sean Yee        23 September 2024

The SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme lets you study at some of Singapore’s more popular universities with up to 100% of the course fees covered. Aspiring scholars have until 30 September 2024 to send in their applications, except for courses at the Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS) that will close applications earlier.

From SIM Global Education and James Cook University (Singapore) to vocational institutions like SHATEC, this education sponsorship continues its dedication to making life-long learning opportunities accessible to enthusiastic self-starters, regardless of their background or financial capabilities.

Hear from three inspiring achievers who have themselves taken this leap of faith.

Rising above setbacks

Joel Goh, 28, Full-time Student (Bachelor of Science in Finance, Singapore University of Social Sciences)

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Joel Goh Sek Meng

When faced with the question – “Which university?”,  Joel chose a different path, one that he hoped would lead him towards the world’s apex. And he was this close to being the pilot of not just an Airbus, but also a promising career.

Alas, the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 shook the tourism sector, and Joel, then a cadet pilot for Singapore Airlines, was hopeful that it would not derail his career ambitions. He was wrong. Soon, he, alongside many of his cadet mates, were let go. “I don’t really see it as a step back,” says Joel, “rather, it’s an opportunity to explore alternate routes.”

However, he didn’t really get that chance. In 2020, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and he took on the role as her primary caretaker. This abrupt life pivot, however, did little to curb his aspiration for greatness.  “I have always wanted to get back to my undergraduate studies,” he remarks, “I had previously been offered the opportunity to major in Business Administration and Management. That wasn’t possible at that time, given that I was a cadet pilot.” That said, there were many considerations he had to contend with, money being the most pressing amongst them.

In an encounter that he would later realise was incredibly fortuitous, Joel met a friend who casually mentioned SAFRA’s Bond-Free Education Scheme. Instantly, he knew that this was the catalyst he needed to jump back into the fray. “I wasn’t sure if I even stood a chance. Only 15 applicants are chosen out of the many to qualify for this scheme,” he recalls. That did not stop Joel though, from seizing the opportunity.

Today, he is an undergraduate at SUSS. “SAFRA’s bond-free education sponsorship enables me to upskill without worrying about the financial burdens that come with a Bachelor’s Degree,” he shares. While the journey to the top has just begun for Joel, he is confident of his ability to handle whatever that may stand in his way.

“There’s a Chinese idiomatic saying, “活到老学到老” (transliterated to mean ‘live until you’re old, learn until you’re old”). One is never too old to learn. Sure, it will require some adjusting and reprioritising, but the end goal remains the same – to remain committed to both my studies and my family,” Joel says.

Teacher by day, student by night

Pritish Andrew Sameer Emmanuel, 38 , Teacher (Master of Guidance and Counselling, James Cook University)

Emmanuel

An educator by trade, Andrew is no stranger to imparting wisdom to anyone who will listen. He understands that the best lessons are those enriched by personal experiences and observations.

As much as he enjoys being the guide on his students’ journeys, Andrew yearns to once again be on the other side of the room as the eager student. “My desire to learn has never faded. But it is a huge step for me to take at this stage of my life,” he muses, “The very idea was daunting – I hadn’t been a student in ages, and my work keeps me away for most of the day.”

However, he did not let his inhibitions deter him from his pursuit to better himself. Chancing upon SAFRA’s bond-free sponsorship through a friend, Andrew took a bet on himself and applied. “Never before has our educational landscape been as competitive and stressful as it is today,” he observes. Through this generous subsidy, he hoped that the new skills and knowledge he would gain would enhance his passion for teaching.

Fast forward to today, Andrew wears two hats – one is that of a teacher and the other, of a university student. And he realised that his initial concerns were unfounded. “I am way more organised than I have ever been in my life. The need to meticulously manage my time to accommodate both my professional and student obligations have really motivated me to tidy up my life. I have become so much more efficient and focused,” he shares.

Andrew attributes his new milestone to the small steps. “Take it a step at a time. Even if it isn’t exactly how you envisioned it, it’s okay. Sure, there will be setbacks along the way, but if you keep your eye on the finishing line and never look back, you’ll eventually get there.”

An everyday kid with limitless ambition

Sean Chua, 25, Fresh Graduate (Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Singapore University of Social Sciences)

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Sean Chua Chee Yong

Sean is truly the quintessential go-getter who makes the best out of every situation. While a student at Jurong West Secondary School, he was determined to make his own way towards excellence. As President of his school’s Student Council in 2014 and the Student Conductor of his symphonic band in 2015, his leadership capabilities led him to secure a spot at Pioneer Junior College via the Direct School Admission program.

Naturally, while an undergraduate at Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS), he sought out any available scholarships that could align with his vision of a better and more enlightened self. “Even with government subsidies, school fees are still relatively exorbitant, especially since I come from a family of moderate means,” he tells us. His checklist for the future is endless, and some of its big ticket items come with big expenses.

Seeing that SAFRA offers bond-free subsidies for eligible SUSS students, he took no time to click the ‘apply’ button. “I had a most pleasant experience; the associates were so assuring and responsive, especially Ms Elaine Tan who helped assuage most of my concerns during the application process,” he shares.

His young age notwithstanding, Sean’s steely focus and unshakable grit are clear testaments to a rare maturity built upon a drive for continuous growth. “Do not be afraid and never question yourself! Confidence is the key to success – how else can you convince anyone else if you aren’t self-assured yourself,” he says, reminding future applicants that “if you do not try, you will never know!”

What do you enjoy most about being a SAFRA member?

“Cheaper bowling prices at SAFRA! I actually check the SAFRA website regularly for great perks to enjoy! Perhaps a short chalet staycation if the right deal comes my way?”
