While every day should be spent appreciating mum, here are some extra special ways to make this day – which falls on every second Sunday of May – a memorable one.
1. Fun Workshops
Create unforgettable memories with mum through a variety of special parent-child workshops held at the various SAFRA clubhouses. Learn to craft wearable floral resin art or pick up the art of decoupage (above right) at SAFRA Mount Faber, while over at SAFRA Yishun, have fun making a tote bag, a piece of wall art using moss and dried materials (above left) or preserved flower glass domes.
Go to www.safra.sg/whats-on/tomumwithlove for details and more Mother’s Day activities.
2. Personal Bouquets
Instead of simply sending a bouquet, let mum put together her own arrangement. Even better, make it a party with her nearest and dearest. A private workshop is available at Nicole’s Flower Design Atelier which can accommodate between five and 10 guests. Choose from hand-tied bouquets to table centrepieces. The two-hour session includes fresh flowers, tools, basic tips on how to care for your blooms, as well as light refreshments.
$168 for two hours at 224 Telok Kurau Road, #01-01; Tel: 9177 4188; Email: info@nicolesflower.com
3. Calming Candles
If you find mum constantly stressed over work or chores, a candle making workshop with To Be Calm could be just the remedy she needs. Here, she’ll get to learn the art of candle making, as well as create her own scent from the variety of fragrances provided. To Be Calm offers regular workshop sessions for up to 16 participants, or private groups that start from four guests.
$65 for 1.5 hours at The Cooking Studio @ The Providore 6A Shenton Way, OUE Downtown Gallery, #B1-07; Email: info@tobecalm.com
4. Stylish Wall Art
Not the hands-on type? You can still “make” a bespoke gift for mum. Simply send in your favourite photos and let AlwaysDesignsCo do the rest. They will create a collage to your liking, you select the words and design, and you will receive a high-res printable file that you can print as many times as you like.
www.etsy.com/sg-en/shop/AlwaysDesignsCo; $16.76 for the printable file
5. DIY Earrings
Have mum flaunt her creativity in the form of her own earrings. Hands On Klay offers polymer clay jewellery making workshops that let you unwind and take home your very own souvenir. The three-and-a-half hour session will have you make two sets of earrings: one with floral designs and the other with marbling and swirls. The workshops are held every weekend on alternate Saturdays and Sundays.
$138 per person, or $238 for two people, for 3.5 hours. Location details will be sent via email once your registration is confirmed.
6. Blossoming Cakes
If you’re looking to wow mum with these exquisite jelly cakes, now would be a great time to do so. Superbloom.sg by Sylvia Ramlal offers basic classes for a minimum of two students, and a maximum of four. During the class, you will learn how to pipe your own flowers, mix colours for the cake, as well as create your very own cake to take home. Basic flower tools will also be provided for you to take home.
$180 per person for 1.5 hours, from 10am to 2.30pm in Hougang, where Ramlal is based. Message her directly on Instagram for details.
