As Singaporeans, August will always be one of our favourite months. From the fireworks during the National Day Parade to a well-deserved public holiday, it’s always a fun month. But National Day celebrations are not the only things to look forward to. In fact, there’s a whole slew of events happening around our sunny island.
Things To Do
SAFRA Swim For Hope
What’s one way to escape the heat? Jump into a swimming pool. Even better if you get to contribute to a good cause while you’re at it. Registration opens this month for SAFRA Swim For Hope, which is returning with 3 swim modes and 6 swim distances to choose from, including a new 15km category.
Participants can choose to do a full virtual swim, full physical swim at selected SAFRA clubs (only for selected distances), or a hybrid swim, which is a mix of virtual and a physical 1km swim at selected SAFRA clubs. But that’s not all — other than the Individual Open category, participants can also form teams with their buddies, colleagues, or even children.
All participants will receive an event tee, finisher medal and goodie bag, while finishers of the 55km Individual Open and 250km Team categories will also receive a finisher tee. SAFRA members will get an additional $10 e-voucher, and proceeds from the event will be donated to help 5 beneficiaries. Register from now till 30 September 2023.
Swim period: 1 September to 29 October 2023; more info at safras4h.sg
SAFRA Diaper Dash
The cutest race in town comes in the form of SAFRA Diaper Dash on the 16 and 17 of September. Cheer on your little ones aged 6 to 18 months with their favourite snacks and toys, as they crawl or walk on the cushioned race track to the finish line!
There are $6,240 worth of prizes to be won. Each baby will also receive an event tee, a finisher medal, and a goodie bag worth $50. And if your baby is one of the top 3 in each category, he or she will receive a trophy. That’s not all – SAFRA members will receive an additional $10 e-voucher which can be used at participating outlets at SAFRA Punggol.
Registration starts from now till 3 September 2023.

Singapore GP Grand Tour @ SAFRA
Singapore Grand Prix 2023 may be in September, but here’s something to wind you up for the upcoming race. A Singapore GP truck will be making its way all around Singapore, stopping by at selected locations which include 3 of our very own clubs – SAFRA Punggol, Yishun and Tampines.
What can you expect from a Singapore GP truck, you may ask? Well, it has racing simulators and interactive displays, open to the public – and SAFRA members can have an extra round of games on the truck.
The truck will stop at each location for 2 days and is open for an estimated 5 hours per day for people to take part in the activities within the truck. Don’t leave without collecting the exclusive Singapore GP memorabilia as a souvenir of the occasion.
Till 25 August 2023 at selected SAFRA clubs; more info and full schedule at safra.sg/whats-on/singapore-gp2023

Dining
Wizard’s Brew Harry Potter Cafe
Harry Potter fans, there’s a new Hogwarts-inspired cafe in Chinatown called Wizard’s Brew. The entire place has been decorated to look like Hogwarts, from the doorbell at the entrance, to details such as a chalkboard drawing of potions and airborne candles.
One thing you must order here is the Phoenix Fire, a drink that bursts into flames as it’s served to you. How’s that for theatrics? For dessert, order the Witches’ Hat, a dish you literally have to set on fire to reveal a chocolatey treat, and Reaper’s Gold, the cafe’s version of tiramisu. So there you have it, muggles. Visit Wizard’s Brew for all your Harry Potter fantasies to come true.

The Hainan Story Chinatown
If you love traditional Hainanese dishes and snacks, you need to check out The Hainan Story’s second outlet at Chinatown Point this month. The eatery serves up a menu that adds a contemporary twist to coffee house dishes – think Hainanese Pork Noodle Soup and Assam Curry Noodles.
But beyond that, star highlights on the menu include the Baked Rice Cake Lasagna ($8.80) and the Mama Wee Curry Chicken Drumstick Set ($10.80). Don’t forget to order a Kopi Gu You, Singapore’s answer to San Francisco’s favourite Bullet Proof Coffee — which comes with a slice of butter.

Gourmet Park RWS
Hear ye, hear ye! We’ve got yet another unique F&B concept in Singapore – and this time, it’s located at Resorts World Sentosa, right outside the entrance of Universal Studios Singapore. Gourmet Park RWS is a food truck stop concept with 16 vendors – with one that has even been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand.
You can’t go wrong with nasi lemak ($14.90) from Dickson Nasi Lemak, or char siew noodles ($10) from Chun Noodle Bar, originally from Amoy Street Food Centre. For international fare, there’s the aforementioned Michelin-approved Kotuwa, which serves up Sri Lankan cuisine. Then, top it all off with ice cream from Coolhaus.

Isshin Mashi at Upper Thomson
Popular Taiwanese eatery Isshin Mashi is slated to open its seventh Singapore outlet at Upper Thomson. Details are still pending, but from the hoardings located along the road, we’re excited to have another outlet to satisfy our Hakka-style Braised Meat Rice ($11.70) and Brown Sugar Caramel Pearl Milk Tea ($5.10) cravings.
If you can’t wait till it opens, head to Isshin Mashi’s other outlets at Holland Village, Serangoon Gardens, East Coast, GR.iD, Waterway Point, and Greenwood.
