Unlocking Educational Freedom: The Power of the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme

Study what you love, shape your own path – here’s how this scheme offered by SAFRA can help you upgrade without the strings attached

By Sean Tan        12 September 2025

In today’s evolving job landscape, flexibility is more prized than ever. Recognising this, SAFRA has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering SAFRA members with opportunities that foster lifelong learning – without tying them down to future commitments. The SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme breaks the mould of conventional scholarships by offering educational sponsorships that carry no post-graduation bond.

A Legacy of Option & Opportunity

Since its inception in 1994, the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme has evolved into a cornerstone for SAFRA principal members looking to upgrade their qualifications, partnering with top-notch institutions to offer diploma, degree, and even master’s programmes. NSmen can easily sign up for membership from only $60 for two years to be eligible for the scheme too. More importantly, this initiative is bond-free, giving recipients full autonomy in shaping their career trajectories. Whether you’re an Ordinary A/B or Life SAFRA member – or even an NSF nearing ORD – the scheme opens doors with zero strings attached.

Diverse Partners, Tailored Pathways

The scheme isn’t just a blanket offer; it comes with a variety of institutional partners, each providing specialised pathways:

  • SHATEC: This collaboration delivers hospitality and tourism diplomas – including culinary arts, pastry, events, and hotel operations – bond-free, complete with mentorship and an apprenticeship allowance of $250 per month.
  • Auston Institute: Offers sponsorships granting 60% off top-up degrees and 50% off diplomas and specialist diplomas, extending the same membership eligibility criteria and bond-free status.
  • PSB Academy & Kaplan: Provide a range of options – from full diploma schemes to degree support – all without post-study obligations.
  • James Cook University Singapore: Offers specialised pathways that cover diverse interests, from business and psychology to technology and data science, to equip students with globally recognised, industry-relevant skills.

Why “Bond-Free” Matters

In Singapore’s education ecosystem, bonded sponsorship alternatives often come with lucrative perks – but they demand years of service in return. By contrast, bond-free schemes grant graduates ultimate flexibility to explore, pivot, or even venture abroad.

This sentiment echoes strongly in forums like Reddit:

“Bond-free is the way to go! … That extra few k a year to tie you down … isn’t worth it.”

“Freedom of bond-free sponsorships is good as you get to explore different organisations…”

These voices underscore the value of autonomy – particularly for those still defining their career path.

Real-world Outcomes

The impact of bond-free sponsorships isn’t theoretical. Testimonials highlight real transformations. We speak to three candidates who shared their journey in applying for the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme. Their stories illustrate how bond-free support can be a springboard – not just a safety net.

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Han Jinyuan

Han Jinyuan
43, Head of Sales for South East Asia

When Han Jinyuan, 43, first came across the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme, he was struck by how it offered financial support without limiting his career choices. As Head of Sales for South East Asia at a leading U.S. water treatment solutions provider, Jinyuan saw the MBA sponsorship as a chance to sharpen his leadership and strategic capabilities. Inspired by the stories of past recipients, he applied with the belief that further education would not only elevate his career but also enable him to give back to the community.

The application process, he recalls, was more than just paperwork – it was a moment of reflection. Crafting his submission gave him space to articulate his vision for the future: harnessing advanced knowledge in leadership, innovation and business strategy to make an impact. His strong career track record, positive outlook, and commitment to lifelong learning helped his case, while the bond-free nature of the scholarship gave him the confidence to embark on the MBA without financial worry.

Today, while still pursuing his MBA at James Cook University, Jinyuan already sees the benefits unfolding. The programme has sharpened his business acumen and credibility, creating opportunities for leadership advancement within his organisation. Balancing studies, work and family is demanding, but he thrives with the support of loved ones and colleagues. For him, the scholarship has been more than financial aid – it has been a catalyst for professional growth, a boost in confidence, and a reminder that with determination and the right support, new doors of opportunity will always open.

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Raeis Azrin

Raeis Azrin
23, Student

For Raeis Azrin, 23, the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme was a chance discovery that changed his academic path. A friend had told him about the sponsorship, and after learning more, Raeis realised it could be the key to pursuing his passion in psychology without the heavy financial burden. Today, he is studying full-time at James Cook University Singapore for a Bachelor’s in Psychological Science, with the scholarship allowing him to focus fully on building a career that will make a positive impact on society.

The application journey, he recalls, was smooth and reassuring. From the helpful SAFRA staff who guided him through the process, to the professional yet welcoming interviewers who put him at ease, Raeis found the experience supportive at every stage. He believes his clarity of purpose – knowing what career he wanted to pursue and how his studies would get him there – played a key role in securing the sponsorship. For him, the sponsorship was not just financial aid, but also an affirmation of his ambitions and direction.

With the scheme helping to ease financial worries, Raeis now has the confidence to push forward. He balances his studies with his personal well-being, often making use of SAFRA’s facilities to stay active and connected with friends, whether at the gym or on the futsal court. His advice to other members is simple but powerful: “Just go for it.” The scheme, he says, is open to people from all walks of life and provides a fair, empowering platform for growth. For Raeis, it has been both a launchpad for his academic journey and a reminder of the broader benefits of being part of the SAFRA community.

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Sng Zhi Wei Edmund

Sng Zhi Wei Edmund
30, Cybersecurity Analyst/Engineer

According to Sng Zhi Wei Edmund, 30, the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme came at just the right time. While browsing his school portal at SUSS, he spotted the opportunity and decided to apply, encouraged by his SAFRA membership. The application was smooth, with a single interview that turned out to be an enjoyable experience despite his initial nerves. Sharing his journey – from his unique background as a former RSAF regular to his career switch into cybersecurity – gave him the chance to show how the sponsorship could support his growth in a fast-evolving industry.

Now a Cybersecurity Analyst/Engineer, Edmund has put the sponsorship to good use, easing the financial load of his part-time studies while also freeing up resources for industry certifications such as AWS. The scheme has allowed him to focus on re-learning and upskilling, from technical areas like programming and networking to unexpected modules like family law. These new skills have broadened his perspective, while the financial relief has given him more confidence to pursue long-term career aspirations in a competitive field.

Balancing work, study, and life hasn’t been easy, but Edmund credits supportive colleagues and disciplined time management for making it possible. He believes that with the right mindset, even full-time professionals can thrive in part-time studies while still enjoying hobbies and family life. His advice to fellow SAFRA members: seize the moment. “In today’s world where knowledge is abundant, this is the best time to further your studies. The SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme makes it achievable – all you need is the hunger to learn.”
