Rise To The Challenge At The Newly Introduced SAFRA Fitness Race

Get your heart and muscles pumping with this exhilarating multi-obstacle challenge.

By Sean Yee        11 April 2023

Surely you remember your very first time attempting the Standard Obstacle Course (SOC) during National Service. The trepidation as you approach the daunting low-wall, the apprehension as you stand before the challenging low rope station – these feelings are as evocative as the electrifying thrill that washes in when you eventually conquer them and run past the finish line.

The upcoming Fitness Race at SAFRA Choa Chu Kang — taking place on 3, 4, 10 and 11 June 2023 — not only features some of these obstacles inspired by the SOC but also a wide variety of gym exercises to give participants a full body workout. Go solo, gather your buddies to form a team or conquer a family-friendly version together with your child (7 to 12 years old). There are different categories of varying intensities to choose from across various fitness levels.

Fees start from only $15, and you will get a race pack, event tee, and finisher medal – and finisher tee for the Elite100 category! Enjoy an additional 20% early bird discount if you sign up before 16 April 2023!

Sounds exciting! Did we also mention that you will be one of the first to race through the new SAFRA Choa Chu Kang?

The challenges

The race begins with a run at the adjacent Choa Chu Kang Park followed by a series of obstacles that will test your endurance, strength, agility, cardiovascular fitness and speed!

Participants across all categories take on the Low Rope, Hi-Lo Wall, Tyre Steps, Tyre Flip, Leopard Crawl and the Slam Ball Over Shoulder Drop. Those in the Elite100 category will also have to overcome the Boat Hold Roll and Farmer’s Walk – while those who are joining the parent and child category will also attempt a family-friendly version of the latter. Some of the know-how from NS training or obstacle course racing is going to come in handy!

That’s not all, you will find yourself presented with four different challenges at the gym including – the Kettle Bell Swing, Hanging Mountain Climber and Barrel Hold Jumping Lunges. Those in the Elite100 category will have another heavyweight addition: Clean and Press. Parent and child participants will not be attempting the gym stations.

If you are unable to complete the obstacle, pay your dues in the form of burpees!

The race concludes with you traversing down a series of steps while lugging a weighted power bag on your back.

Categories

The Elite100 category is now fully subscribed. However, you can still form a team of four to compete in the Teams category, which features the same intensity of challenges as the Elite100 category, but you’ll compete together in a relay format. Otherwise, if you still prefer to be a lone wolf, you can take on the Individual Open category to test your prowess.

Families are also not left out of the fun. There is a Parent and Child category that will feature a selection of the obstacle challenges to provide a good mix of exercises, excitement and bonding moments.

More information on the categories can be found here.

What you’ll receive

Participants will be rewarded with an event tee, a race pack (worth $80), a sweet Finisher medal and an E-certificate. Competitors in the Elite100 category get an additional Finisher Tee to boot!
