I’m a foodie, and I especially love prata! For me, a good prata is not only a piece of freshly prepared, crispy indulgence but it’s also a simple, affordable pleasure.
I usually indulge in my cravings at one of the bustling local hawker centres near my home, where a couple of egg pratas and a chicken curry often set me back just a few dollars. But when some of my foodie friends started raving about Sakunthala’s Restaurant, an Indian-Muslim restaurant known for its signature fusion range of south Indian and north Indian dishes, I was intrigued but quite skeptical at first…
Could a plate of prata, no matter how good, truly be worth shelling out more than double what I would typically pay? I decided, why not try it out for myself? It wouldn’t hurt to splurge and indulge every once in a while… right?

First Impressions
Walking into Sakunthala’s Restaurant, I found it to be really clean and brightly lit, yet not too uptight and uncomfortable, like how an “atas” restaurant might feel like. It still had some of that casual vibe, and dining here made me feel at ease at the very least!
As soon as we walked in, a friendly staff member showed me and my internship colleague to our table to take our orders. The server was very kind and welcoming, helping us place our orders in an amicable yet efficient manner.
We went a little overboard in picking our dishes as we wanted to try out as many of the restaurant’s signatures as possible. Here’s what we ordered: Egg Cheese Prata, Egg Prata, Butter Chicken with Garlic Naan, and, for a sweet finish, a massive Tissue Prata… whew! And for drinks, we went with an Ice Milo and an Ice Teh.
The wait time for our food to arrive did not take too long, even though the restaurant was buzzing. When the feast arrived, my initial skepticism about the price tag started to melt away. The portions were noticeably larger than what I’m used to, and the food itself looked incredible. I was wondering if we could finish all these all by ourselves but it looked so mouthwatering that my doubts vanished in an instant!
Let’s Dig In!
The Egg Cheese Prata ($4.80) was my favourite! Unlike other places that just use a flimsy slice of processed cheese in their pratas, Sakunthala’s Restaurant uses a generous amount of high-quality, flavourful cheese that was perfectly melted and integrated throughout the crispy dough and eggs. The Egg Prata ($3.20) here was also a classic and you could never go wrong with it – well worth the price even though it costs almost double that of others elsewhere!
But the one dish that surprised me the most was the Butter Chicken ($11.00) – it was rich, creamy, and so delectable that we were dunking pieces of the delicious Garlic Naan ($4.20), and even the pratas, into it until the last drop was gone. There was a generous amount of savoury chicken meat in the gravy as well, so it’s packed full of flavour with each spoonful!
The Ice Milo ($4.00) and Ice The ($2.50) we ordered were exactly what we needed. They were comforting drinks to go with all the richly-flavoured dishes, and were perfect for washing down all the food.
And then came the Tissue Prata ($3,50). It was huge, towering over our table, paper-thin and crispy, drizzled with sugar! It was the perfect dessert to share, a light and sweet ending to a very heavy meal. (We even dipped it into the Butter Chicken gravy, and found it surprisingly complements each other so well!)
Is It Really Worth It?
By the time we were done, we were completely stuffed and thoroughly satisfied. The sheer quality of the ingredients, the generous portions, and the excellent table service collectively justified the price point. And here’s the best part: As a SAFRA member, I received a discount on the final bill!
So, is Sakunthala’s Restaurant worth the price? Absolutely, yes! If you’re a true lover of Indian food, and you are willing to spend a little more than usual to treat yourself, then Sakunthala’s Restaurant is a place you absolutely must try. It’s a step up from your everyday hawker fare, offering a proper sit-down experience with dishes that are elevated from the classic fare. I’d highly recommend it for a pleasurable and genuinely delicious meal – just be sure to bring your besties or family members to help you finish the large portions!
