Mr Teh Tarik started as a humble little drinks stall in Far East Square in 2004. Office workers and casual diners alike would drop by for a teh tarik and other quick refreshments. Since then, this successful start-up has amassed a loyal following of diners who still patronise its stores for a daily cup of good teh.
Today, 20 years since its first shop, Mr Teh Tarik has 6 brands under its belt and over 26 outlets operating across our little red dot. Its latest venture, Mr Teh Tarik Cartel, has opened its doors at SAFRA’s Choa Chu Kang clubhouse, pivoting from its signature prata dishes to zi char-inspired offerings.
We pay a visit to this halal-certified casual eatery for a taste of its contemporary dishes and of course, an instant perk-me-up in the form of teh tarik!

As hearty as it gets
The first dish we had was a zi char staple – Har Cheong Gai Chicken Wings. Really, one can never go wrong with fermented shrimp paste. The experience is best described as positively auditory, as every bite comes with a pleasant crunch that is packed with a delicious piquancy. Mr Teh Tarik Cartel’s take on this ubiquitous dish is met with nods of approval from my fellow diners.
The next dish, Salted Egg Fried Prawns, continues the trip down wok-hei lane. The chefs at Mr Teh Tarik Cartel have removed the prawn heads, promising a mess-free experience for diners who prefer to keep their hands clean. The coating takes centrestage with this one; the buttery sauce punctuates the dish with a rich and indulgent base that makes it a natural accompaniment to a bowl of rice. Additionally, the mild heat from the sliced red chilli makes a really nice finish!
Concluding an already flavour-packed meal is a huge serving of Curry Fish Head. I’m one of those who consume only the gravy and vegetables in a fish head curry, but I loved the curry gravy in this variation by Mr Teh Tarik Cartel. It’s everything you want in a curry – aromatic, robust and hearty, with generous pieces of melt-in-your-mouth eggplant and ladyfinger. For those who enjoy a good fish head, there’s good news! My dining companions devoured the fish head (which they said was very succulent), wiping it clean – I’m not sure if there’s any higher praise than that.
Sadly, the belly has its limits. I do hope to try out its Steamed Fish the next time I’m here!
To complete the experience, it is a must to try its eponymous drink – a chilled glass of Iced Mr Teh Tarik. The sweet-toothed will love it, but you can ask for siu dai if you prefer it that way. Truly, it’s the ultimate comfort drink, especially for those looking for a bit of a boost in the day. The Iced Teh Limau is instant energy in a cup, with a light tanginess that makes for a refreshing sip.
A refreshed look
Mr Teh Tarik Cartel stepped out of the box with this rendition, enlivening its established brand of over 20 years with aesthetic originality. The entire ceiling is adorned with hanging plants that beautifully harmonise with the greenery of Choa Chu Kang Park just outside, which serves as a vibrant backdrop. This, alongside panoramic windows, accentuates the dining experience with a glimpse of communal life at SAFRA.
