Make & Bake, Play & Shop With Kiddo At Home

Here’s how you can keep your littlest loved ones – and yourself – entertained even when you’re spending quality family time indoors.

With the return to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), bringing the brood out for the weekend, daily playtime outdoors or even just to run an errand or a stroll, might have become less than cheery. While you can head out in bigger groups of more than 2, you might have to prove that everyone in the group is a family member residing in the same residence when needed to, and besides, it isn’t exactly safe for the children to wander about for too long outside and be potentially exposed to the awful COVID-19 virus. But, staying in with the kids needn’t be a boring affair; you can still keep the playful ones (yourself included) happy by engaging in some fun and productive activities at home.

Make A Cutesy Accessory

There are many D.I.Y. projects that you can undertake while at home, even without proper materials, tools or supplies. One such activity that will show your love for your kid and vice versa, is making and gifting each other handmade accessories. Some of the easiest ones to do: a necklace using some string and old buttons; couple bracelets using coloured rubberbands or hair ties; or even a simple tote bag sewn up using old clothes. It’s a creative way to upcycle your unwanted stuff, and an opportunity to teach your child all about handiwork, eco-consciousness and sustainability.

If your future fashion designer prefers making an actual accessory with the proper materials and with proper instruction, you can try getting the DIY Animal Leather Charm Kit ($25.25 for two) from KKday, an e-commerce travel platform that offers virtual tours and family-friendly activities. Suitable for kids aged 8 years and above, the kit comes with scratch- and water-resistant Saffiano leather, a keychain and easy step-by-step instructions with images for your child to make charm that can be hooked onto a bag, purse or to keys. The only problem? You will need to decide on an animal design – bull, moose, hippo or elephant. Or, you can just order sets for all 4 designs so your little crafts maker can make more gifts for more loved ones.

The DIY Animal Leather Charm Kit is available from KKDay.

Bake Some Tasty Nom Noms

This is more for the homemakers with cooking and baking experience (or, even if you aren’t one but are willing and adventurous enough to try doing so with the kids), with a working kitchen with the right kitchen appliances (a.k.a. baking oven), utensils and tools.

If you do not have the actual skills (teaching or baking), then you could embark on an adventure together with your aspiring master chef junior by getting the DIY Bake n Deco Home Kit for Kids,  ($68) or the Singapore Heritage Snack Kit ($85), both sold on KKday. The former lets kiddo bake adorable bakes such as emoji cookies, penguin cookie bites and more, while the latter allows him or her to try his or her hand at rustling up traditional Singaporean treats such as mantou, kueh lapis sagu and kueh dadar; both come with easy instructions and all the ingredients, tools and supplies. Look them up at KKday to pick your baking array of choice.
