Celebrating the Greatness And Contribution Of All Men This International Men’s Day

From service to family and beyond, we celebrate and honour the men who lead with resilience, care and quiet strength

Every 19 November, the world comes together to mark International Men’s Day (IMD) — a global observance that celebrates the positive value men bring to the world, their families, and communities. It’s a moment to shine a light on men’s achievements, well-being, and the often-unspoken roles they play — as fathers, sons, husbands, leaders, mentors, and friends.

For Singapore’s National Servicemen (NSmen), this day holds a special resonance. Beyond their service in uniform, many continue to contribute quietly but significantly at home, at work, and in society. And for SAFRA, an organisation built by and for NSmen, this celebration isn’t just symbolic, it’s personal.

Honouring Everyday Heroes

Behind every title or rank, there’s a story of perseverance and heart. NSmen don’t just serve during their active years or during ICTs, they carry the same spirit of discipline, resilience, and teamwork into their daily lives. Whether it’s a father staying up late to help his child with homework after a long workday, or a friend rallying his buddies for a weekend fitness session, these moments capture what International Men’s Day is truly about: the everyday acts of strength, responsibility, and care that shape families and communities.

SAFRA’s mission has always been to support and celebrate NSmen beyond the parade square — providing spaces, programmes, and experiences that help men connect, grow, and recharge. From the camaraderie of a futsal match at SAFRA Tampines to quality family time at the clubs’ dining spots, or wellness programmes that help members stay fit both mentally and physically, SAFRA is where men can nurture all aspects of their well-being.

Championing Men’s Well-Being

One of the core themes of International Men’s Day is men’s health — both physical and mental. Across Singapore, conversations about male mental health have grown more open and urgent, recognising that strength is not just about endurance, but also about the courage to seek help, talk, and connect.

Through initiatives like SAFRA’s Health & Wellness programmes, men are encouraged to take proactive steps in self-care, from sports challenges and fitness assessments to talks on mental resilience and emotional health. And because camaraderie often starts with shared experience, many SAFRA clubs are home to communities of interest, from cycling and running groups to music and photography circles, where NSmen can find connection and friendship.

As one SAFRA member aptly puts it: “It’s the small things — meeting friends for a run, sharing laughs at the gym, or just talking over coffee — that keep us grounded. SAFRA makes that part of life easier.”

Recognising Contributions At Home And In Society

Men’s roles have evolved over the decades. Today’s NSmen are not just providers; they’re caregivers, partners, and nurturers. They coach their kids’ football teams, share household duties, and take pride in being hands-on fathers. SAFRA’s wide range of family-friendly facilities — from swimming pools and playgrounds to enrichment courses — support this balance, making quality family time accessible and meaningful.

And beyond family life, many SAFRA members also give back through community initiatives and volunteering, mentoring younger NSFs or supporting social causes through SAFRA-organised events. These contributions echo the IMD theme of “making a positive difference” — not through grand gestures, but through everyday leadership.

Celebrating The Brotherhood

What makes SAFRA special is not just its facilities, it’s the brotherhood that ties its members together. The friendships forged during NS often last a lifetime, and SAFRA remains a natural meeting point for rekindling that spirit. Whether it’s a simple catch-up over kopi after an IPPT session, or joining a club interest group to reignite old passions, the sense of belonging is what keeps the NSmen community strong.

This International Men’s Day, SAFRA celebrates the brotherhood that has carried Singapore’s defence and community spirit for generations, a reminder that while every man’s journey is different, none of them walk it alone.

Saluting The Men Who Keep Moving Forward

As we celebrate International Men’s Day this year, let’s take a moment to recognise the men in our lives: the steadfast, the silent, the strong, and the supportive. Their contributions may not always make the headlines, but their impact is deeply felt in every corner of society.

To all NSmen, past and present — SAFRA salutes you.

Your dedication, strength, and heart make you more than servicemen. You are the builders of homes, the mentors of tomorrow, and the quiet heroes of today.

So this 19 November, take time to celebrate yourself and the men around you. Reconnect with your buddies, plan a family day out, or simply take a moment to recharge. Because greatness isn’t always loud — sometimes, it’s simply the strength to keep showing up for the people and values that matter most.

Happy International Men’s Day!
