As Singapore proudly marks its 60th year of independence, this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) is more than just a celebration – it’s a heartfelt reflection of our national identity, collective resilience and shared aspirations. Anchored by the theme “Majulah Singapura”, SG60 is about honouring the past, celebrating the present, and marching confidently into the future. Leading the charge at this iconic event are two dedicated commanders who bring very different yet equally inspiring stories to the table: Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Mohamed Firdaus bin Mohd Ghazali, the Parade Commander, and Lieutenant Colonel (NS) Alex Chan Kwok Hoh, the Mobile Column Commander. Together, they embody the heart of this historic event – rooted in commitment, fuelled by service, and made possible by the unwavering support of their teams and families.
Commanding with Heart: LTC Mohamed Firdaus, Parade Commander

At just 38, LTC Firdaus has spent over a decade in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) leading from the ground up. Currently the Commanding Officer of the Motorised Infantry Training Centre, he is also juggling postgraduate studies in Information Technology in Business at SMU – all while steering the Parade & Ceremony (P&C) segment for SG60. His appointment as Parade Commander is both a professional milestone and a deeply personal honour.
“This appointment is the fulfilment of a childhood dream,” he reflects. “To lead the parade during such a historic year is a privilege – and a tribute to everyone who has contributed to Singapore’s journey over the last 60 years.”
The P&C segment of SG60 will feature 40 marching contingents, the highest since 1990, including a record-breaking 18 civilian contingents representing various social and economic sectors. It also includes multiple “firsts”: the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will be participating with a Guard of Honour contingent, alongside the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF); and the SAF Volunteer Corps (SAFVC) will march as a full contingent for the first time, marking its 10th anniversary.

LTC Firdaus emphasises that beyond precision drills and ceremonial protocols, the true challenge lies in leadership and connection. “It’s not just about executing commands,” he says. “It’s about inspiring over 2,000 individuals – from youths to veterans – to come together with unity and pride.”
He personally invests in every participant’s morale, penning birthday cards, initiating ground engagement sessions, and maintaining open lines of communication. “Everyone in the parade is part of something bigger than themselves. That’s the message I want them to carry.”
Rolling with Resolve: LTC (NS) Alex Chan, Mobile Column Commander

While the marching contingents represent the human heart of the parade, the Mobile Column showcases Singapore’s technological and operational muscle – and at its helm is 48-year-old LTC (NS) Alex Chan Kwok Hoh, a career NSman who now serves as Chief of Staff at the 8th Singapore Armoured Brigade (8 SAB).
Currently overseeing Support Operations at Alexandra Hospital in civilian life, LTC (NS) Chan was first commissioned as an Armour officer in 2001. Since then, he has moved through the ranks, leading battalions and maintaining his commitment to service even through the COVID-19 years. His previous command, 489 SAR, was awarded Best NS Armoured Unit for three consecutive years (2023–2025).
“To lead the Mobile Column on our nation’s 60th birthday is a great honour,” he shares. “It’s also a chance to showcase the SAF and Home Teams’ capabilities – and what decades of progress and partnership have built.”

This year’s Mobile Column features 170 assets across land, sea, and air, including an integrated aerial flypast over the Padang and a maritime display at Marina Bay. For the first time, the convoy will extend beyond the Padang to incorporate surrounding landmarks and involve multiple services working in seamless coordination.
“This isn’t a show – it’s a demonstration of our nation’s readiness and resolve,” LTC (NS) Chan explains. “It’s a reminder that peace and stability are earned, maintained, and protected through the quiet strength of many.”
Training, Trust, and the Singapore Spirit
Both commanders agree that months of preparation have been physically demanding and logistically complex, but also deeply meaningful.
LTC Firdaus and his team began planning as early as 2024, with rehearsals running intensively from May. Meanwhile, LTC (NS) Chan’s Mobile Column contingent had to navigate multi-agency coordination while managing daily responsibilities across different professions and services. “One of our biggest challenges,” says LTC (NS) Chan, “was aligning everyone’s operational roles with rehearsal commitments. But the motivation and unity among the participants made it possible.”

Each man draws strength from his team – and from their families. LTC Firdaus shares how his wife has supported him in countless ways, from managing the home to preparing soup before long days of rehearsals. LTC (NS) Chan is equally grateful to his wife Mirin, who holds the family together during his long absences – even while their son Keith participates in NDP 2025, as part of “From Generation to Generation”, one of this year’s four thematic segments of the Mobile Column.

“This parade isn’t about me,” says LTC (NS) Chan. “It’s about every Singaporean who contributes quietly behind the scenes – from spouses and children to employers and commanders who pick up the slack. It’s a collective effort.”
From Padang to Heartland: SG60 for Every Singaporean
This year’s NDP expands beyond the Padang with community outreach and live satellite viewing across the island, ensuring more Singaporeans can be part of the celebration. The public can also witness the uncasing of the SAF Colours – a solemn ceremonial moment – at Marina Square for the first time, allowing citizens to experience a closer connection to the traditions behind the parade.
During the National Anthem, Uniformed Youth Organisations will form the phrase “Majulah 60” using umbrellas, during the State Flag Flypast, symbolising a hopeful and united future led by younger generations. “It’s a powerful visual that honours both legacy and youth,” says LTC Firdaus.

Legacy, Leadership and Looking Ahead
Both commanders hope their journeys inspire others – not just to serve, but to serve with heart.
“I want future commanders and NSmen to know that leadership isn’t about titles,” says LTC Firdaus. “It’s about responsibility, empathy, and inspiring excellence in others.”
LTC (NS) Chan adds, “I hope more NSmen step forward when called. We are all part of this story, and it’s up to us to uphold the legacy of those who came before us.”

As 9 August draws near, both men extend heartfelt thanks to every Singaporean who has played a role – big or small – in bringing SG60 to life.
“To the parade participants, trainers, families, and fellow citizens – thank you,” says LTC Firdaus. “This isn’t just a national celebration. It’s a reminder that when we come together – in service, in spirit, and in strength – we can carry our flag high for generations to come.”
A Nation United in Celebration
SG60 is more than a birthday – it’s a pledge. A celebration of where we’ve been, a reflection on where we are, and a commitment to the future we will build together.
So whether you’re in the stands at the Padang, watching from Marina Bay, or tuning in from home, take a moment to appreciate the thousands of Singaporeans behind every uniform, every vehicle, every formation.
Because when the flags wave, the drums roll, and the sky lights up in red and white – it’s not just a parade you’re watching. It’s Singapore, united.
Majulah Singapura.
