Get Fit In Style: Refresh Your Workout Wardrobe For 2025

What you wear while exercising does matter – here’s how to select the right apparel and footwear for comfort and performance.

The start of the year is a great time to invest in new workout clothes, especially if one of your resolutions is to take up a new sport or squeeze in more gym sessions.

But what should you look for when creating or updating your workout wardrobe? From tops with moisture-wicking properties to keep you cool on hot days, to shorts that help you move easily and shoes that support and stabilise your stance, there’s a lot to consider. And, if you’re looking to save money when you shop, we’ve included some amazing deals just for SAFRA members and servicemen (11B holders).

Exercise tops

When buying workout tops, there are two main features you should never compromise on: moisture management and breathability. After all, the last thing you want while working up a sweat is for the fabric to feel damp or stick to your skin. You may think that cotton is a good fabric choice, but this material can trap sweat, affecting your body’s temperature-regulating abilities. Go with polyester, nylon or spandex instead – these aren’t just breathable; they also dry quickly and keep perspiration away from your body, keeping you cool and comfortable during workouts.

Don’t forget to try before you buy. Tops that are too tight or fitting may feel restrictive and cause chafing, while those that are oversized may end up getting caught on the exercise equipment.

Asics has an excellent range of tank tops, jackets, and short- and long-sleeved shirts, created for just about every sport and activity. SAFRA members enjoy up to 15% off selected regular-priced items. Visit safra.sg/promotions/Asics-stores for more information.

Workout bottoms

Your choice of workout bottoms depends on your sport or activity. For instance, if you’re cycling, you’ll want shorts or tights that are close-fitting; baggy pants may get caught in the bike pedals. Weightlifting, too, may require bottoms that are fitted, so that you don’t have to worry about excess fabric bunching up in sensitive areas. If you’re walking or running, you may want shorts or pants that are of a looser fit, so that you can move with ease. The fabric should also be durable to withstand intense workouts.

Breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics are important to help keep you cool and dry. And seek out designs that promote airflow, such as mesh panels or perforations. If the bottom has antimicrobial fibres, even better, as these may help to reduce odours.

Check out Skechers for its selection of shorts and pants, designed to help you get the most out of your exercise sessions. SAFRA members receive 15% off regular-priced apparel and footwear.  Go to safra.sg/promotions/skechers-2025 to find out more.

Athletic socks

Cushioning and support are two of the most important things to look for when choosing athletic socks. Ideally, there should be padding on the front and heel of the sock to protect against compression, rubbing, and blisters.

The fabric should also have moisture-wicking properties to ensure that your feet stay dry and comfortable and to reduce the risk of blisters. If you prefer socks that are breathable, go for thinner ones made from acrylic, nylon or merino wool. Thicker socks may be a good option if you want extra comfort and protection, or if you’re exercising in cool weather. Socks made from wool and polyester dry quickly and are thus good for odour control.

Suitable footwear

Your choice of footwear depends on your sport or activity, but generally, you should opt for comfort, stability, and freedom of movement over everything else.

The perfect pair of shoes should therefore provide ample cushioning (minimal cushioning may offer more flexibility and allow you to feel more of the ground, but they should still support and protect your feet); they should also fit well, to minimise your risk of blisters, aches, bunions and other foot problems, and support your heels so that your heels don’t slip when you move. If you have flat feet, you may need extra arch support to reduce pain and discomfort.

Breathability is also crucial, to wick away sweat and moisture and to minimise your risk of fungal infections and blisters, so select upper materials like mesh and knit that provide ventilation.

If you play a specific sport or do a particular activity regularly, then you may need to buy a sport-specific shoe.

Bata’s Sneaker Studio features over 300 styles from nine brands. SAFRA members enjoy 15% off storewide on regular-priced items. Go to safra.sg/promotions/bata to find out more.

Accessories & gear

Sports eyewear

Your workout wardrobe is not complete without accessories and other extras, such as caps, waist pouches, grip gloves, water bottles, fitness trackers, and gym bags.

If you exercise outdoors, remember to protect your eyes. Invest in a pair of well-made sunglasses. It should be lightweight and anti-slip, and have impact-resistant lenses.

SAFRA members get $20 off their purchase at Lenskart with a minimum spend of $100. Get additional details at safra.sg/promotions/lenskart-nslifesg
