2. Batu Caves, Malaysia
An ancient Hindu religious site in Malaysia, located north of the capital Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves has long been one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. Thought to be some 400 years old, it is recognisable the world over by its towering flight of rainbow-hued stairs – 272 of them, to be exact – which lead to a temple and cave shrines.

3. Hoi An, Vietnam
The languid gracefulness of this historic town along the central coast of Vietnam is a boon for photo buffs seeking some nostalgia. Once a major port with Japanese, Chinese and French influences, Hoi An was awarded UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1999, and over 800 historic buildings have been preserved in its Old Town. Colourful but weathered facades and varied design features make for atmospheric snaps. Another emblematic attraction is the covered Japanese bridge, which was first constructed in the 1590s by the Japanese community to link itself with the Chinese side of the city.
Don’t miss the Hoi An Lantern Festival, held one night a month during the full moon, when thousands of colourful lanterns are lit on the streets and in the waters of the Hoai River, creating an ethereal atmosphere.

4. The White Temple, Thailand
Buddhist place of worship Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai, better known as The White Temple, looks sparkling white and dazzling alongside its reflection off a nearby water body. The original temple was in a bad state of disrepair and local artist Chalermchai Kositpipat has spent some 40 million baht so far to completely rebuild and refurbish it. Works are still ongoing and are said to last till 2070, but there are plenty of Instagram-able areas still.
As this is an active place of worship, dress conservatively. Take care not to inadvertently disrespect local customs – for instance, do not take nude photos or climb on temple structures or sculptures.

5. Fushimi Inari Shrine, Japan
Dedicated to the Shinto god Inari, the deity of a good harvest, the Fushimi Inari Shrine functions as the chief of Japan’s thousands of Inari shrines. Its path of endless vibrant vermillion torii gates, which line the approach to Mount Inari, is impressive and forms one of the most cherished images of Japan and the outer Kyoto area. Pay respects at the shrine’s main hall, and perhaps offer a donation too, before heading to the hiking trail that’s flanked by the famous gates.
While a return hike to the summit can take two to three hours, you’re free to turn back at any time. Try to partake in some of the local dishes such as Inari Sushi and Kitsune Udon, offered by several restaurants along the trail.

6. Kawasan Falls, the Philippines
Located 105km southwest of Cebu city in the Philippines, the Kawasan area plays host to a series of waterfalls, with the first one being the largest. Each waterfall features a peaceful turquoise pool bounded by lush scenery and steep limestone canyon walls. If you’re keen, canyoneering tours can be arranged too.
Be sure to rent a life jacket if you’re wanting to swim under the waterfalls, as it’s compulsory to don one. Bring swim shoes, and waterproof cases or bags for your phone and belongings.
