The protagonist of this Thai-language film, which was directed by Singaporean Kirsten Tan in her feature debut, goes out and buys himself an elephant. The elephant in question, a trained street performer, turns out to be his childhood companion, Pop Aye. Together, man and beast set off from Bangkok towards their rural hometown, and the middle-aged man discovers some home truths about himself.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop Aye<\/em> won a Special Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. <sup id=\"cite_ref-tnp_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Sundance_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-first_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>It was also the Singaporean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film\u00a0at the\u00a090th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Singapore_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6617\" src=\"https:\/\/191-dev.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/06175422\/AwardWinningSGMovies-TheSongsWeSang.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"836\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\">The Songs We Sang<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s4\">Out now, <a href=\"https:\/\/theprojector.sg\/films-and-events\/the-songs-we-sang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Projector Plus<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81310409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Stars: Eric Moo, Liang Wern Fook, Billy Koh<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\">An ode to <i>xinyao<\/i>, this film by Eva Tang is a loving portrait of a uniquely Singaporean musical movement that first arose in the 1970s and peaked in the 1980s. Essentially Mandarin folk songs set against the socio-political and cultural landscape of the era, <i>xinyao<\/i> songs now evoke a deep nostalgia for the sounds made popular by the pioneers of the genre, such as Liang, Moo and Koh. With him frequently absent, she is left to tend to his frail father and show up at family functions. At school, she takes notice of a student (Koh) who has his own sense of estrangement from his parents. Director Anthony Chen reunites with his <i>Ilo Ilo <\/i>stars Koh and Yeo, who won the Best Actress prize at the Golden Horse Awards for her performance. Seeking to unravel the mystery of his parents<span class=\"s3\">\u2019 <\/span>unspoken love affair, and the missing details from his own life story, he heads to Singapore and finds his uncle, a bak kut teh seller (Lee). When he meets his grandmother for the first time, he learns more than just family recipes. Former journalist Sandi Tan<span class=\"s3\">\u2019<\/span>s acclaimed documentary feature, a prize winner at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, reflects on the teenage Tan making an independent movie in the early 1990s. With help from her friends Ng and Harvey, Tan wrote and acted in the original <i>Shirkers<\/i>. However, the film was never released as the director vanished mysteriously with all the footage. As a young man, he also served in Kublai Khan<span class=\"s3\">\u2019<\/span>s court.
