After two long years of working from home and safe distancing measures, we may have gotten into a routine thats become too familiar. Why not try a new activity that will reap you health benefits as well? Here are some fun experiences to try – and SAFRA members enjoy discounts at some of them as well.

Bullseye!

Photo: Salt & Light Archery Facebook

If you’ve always imagined yourself as Robin Hood or Hawkeye from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then maybe it’s time to try your hand at archery! Its a sport that builds confidence, requires determination and patience, and trains your mental awareness as well. Perfecting your shot takes time, strength and training. And the best part of archery here is that it is an indoor leisure sport – no sweltering under the hot sun!

It is a competitive sport but you can choose to train and shoot at your own pace; best of all it can also be a fun group sport with family and friends.

If youre looking to try it out as a beginner, check out Salt & Light Archery at SAFRA Punggol which offers a Try-Out ($10 for 10 shots) or 1-hour Guided Funshoot session. Instructors will be on hand to guide you through your first shoot, and basic equipment will be provided.

SAFRA Members and Affiliated Members enjoy 10% discount off courses (i.e. Try-outs, Funshoot, Basic and Advance archery courses, Junior & Youth training programme and Funshoot packages) only.

Roll Through Nature

Photo: Bikes@Waterway Facebook

Tired of your long walks up Bukit Timah Hill or along dense and humid forest trails? Try cycling! Instead of embarking on a tough ride, opt for a breezy cycling experience with your friends or family along the new Punggol Waterway with its expansive greenery and spectacular scenery. One of the more popular cycling routes for those looking to experience the natural outdoors, this route has become a must-do for both professional and leisure cyclists.

Have a smooth and easy ride along the Park Connector Network (PCN) and waterway route, then go further to explore Coney Island and Punggol Jetty. If you dont own a bicycle, or prefer to start cycling at Punggol PCN instead of from home, check out Bikes@Waterway at SAFRA Punggol. They have a wide variety of bicycles to pick from and rates are affordable.

SAFRA Members and Affiliated Members get 10% to 16% off on rentals depending on model of bicycle (excluding Family Bike) and skate rental at Bikes@Waterway.

Fence It Out

Photo: Z Fencing Facebook

If youve always been impressed by fencers in their all-white outfits and their sleek and graceful movements, then maybe fencing could be a new sport to try! But dont be fooled by the beautiful moves and rhythms of fencing; it is a demanding sporting activity that requires a lot of mental discipline, analysis and observation, lightning fast reflexes, strength and power. You can learn it as a recreational activity, or proceed further into it as a competitive sport.

In fencing, there are three disciplines and three weapons – the foil, epee and sabre – and each comes with its own ancient history, techniques and rules. In a bout, you score a point when you hit your opposing partner without getting hit while duelling in a restricted and defined space. The more you hit the more points you gain. If the sport sounds dangerous, thats where the pristine all-white outfits come in – they are padded and designed to offer maximum protection to the wearer, along with the mask.

Interested? Sign up at Z Fencing Elite Academy at SAFRA Toa Payoh, which was started by an Olympian and three of Singapores best fencers. The academy has a 6,000 sq ft space with 10 electrical fencing pistes and impact protection flooring – the largest dedicated fencing facility in Singapore and the region. It has courses for kids and adults, and at different levels to suit your abilities.

Throw Like A Pro

Before the advent of body combat and mixed martial arts (MMA), judo was quite a popular sport for those looking for some form of self-defence or martial arts practice. Famed for its fluid and spectacular throws (a technique employed frequently in many action movies), judo is also known for its grappling techniques, arm locks, choke holds and the famed ukemi techniques and philosophy.

If you find body combat frenetic and MMA a tad too vigorous and rough, then maybe judo would be a good fit for you as it focuses more on control than brute force. As a fun sport and intense exercise activity you can do on your own or with friends and family, judo has several levels that enable you to progress based on your own abilities.

Depending your preference, SA Judo Academy is the only club in Singapore that offers Recreational, Competitive and Self-defence programmes for both adults and children.

The post Discover A World Of History, Intrigue And Fun Activities For The Whole Family appeared first on eNSMAN.

]]>

The March school holidays are here again! For most of us, this means planning some activities to entertain the kids and to make sure that quality time is spent as a family.

If you’ve exhausted almost all your options of where to bring your family to (after all, how many times can you visit the Resorts World Sentosa and Gardens by the Bay?), we have one really great suggestion for you: The Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC), and there’s a plethora of activities you can explore here.

As a non-profit organization, the SDC’s mission is to share the Singapore Story and inspire a desire to contribute to Singapore’s future by providing a mind-and-heart-engaging, multi-sensory learning experience which spans a selection of integrated themes. According to its Executive Director, Joseph Tan, the SDC is “constantly looking at ways to make the Singapore Story relevant through the fun, exciting and interactive attractions and activities so that the public, especially the youth, are engaged and prepared for the challenges of the future.”

So be sure to plan a trip down to the Singapore Discovery Centre and you will be able to discover all the engaging activities the whole family can enjoy there. Here are some of the highlights of what to expect.

Walk Through Singapore’s Tumultuous Past

Don’t miss this exhibition before it ends on 28 March! Created in conjunction with Total Defence Day, the showcase of Re: Our Scars. For Your Necessary Action. at the Singapore Discovery Centre’s Permanent Exhibits Gallery presents a detailed look into the past crises, challenges and adversity endured by our country.

From the horrors of wartime inflicted in the Japanese Occupation during World War II and civil unrest during the Konfrontasi era to disasters like the bombing of the MacDonald House and the Cable Car Tragedy, each portion of the exhibition is packed with facts and nuggets of knowledge which will serve to remind you of the importance of inculcating a strong Total Defence.

Be sure to try out all the interactive elements while you are going through the exhibition, they are really fun especially for the kids. Games such as an Augmented Reality shoot-out where you try to defend against attackers to becoming a reporter in a digital interactive screen that lets you record and play back your “reporting”, can be found throughout the exhibition and makes it an entertaining way to learn about Total Defence while brushing up your knowledge on Singapore’s past history.

“Our newly revamped Permanent Exhibits Gallery – Through the Lens of Time is a must-visit. It brings visitors on an immersive journey from the past to present and they can discover new stories and perspectives about Singapore through the use of enhanced technology such as Augmented Reality,” says Joseph.

Enter An Alternative Dimension

Have you tried the fun and thrilling experience of Escape Rooms? Here’s your chance to do so! Gather a group of friends or your family members and head over to the Black Lake Facility for an exciting Escape Room game. This is the largest multi-storey escape room attraction in Singapore, and you can choose from 4 themed story chapters to go through, all conducted in 13 rooms.

Making use of smart technology in the forms of motion sensors, touch sensors and UV lighting, players have to navigate puzzle pieces and try to solve the mysteries surrounding five soldiers who were sent on “Operation Onyx” – a top-secret military reconnaissance mission to an alternative dimension.

Be ready to act the roles of special agents, and go through the four chapters: The Armoury, The Medical Centre, The Research Lab and The Basement, each with its various thrill factor and difficulty level, to try and uncover what dangerous discoveries the soldiers have made in the other world.

Fight Through Aliens And Monsters

Want to ramp things up to more thrilling levels? Sign up for a game of laser tag at the Black Lake Laser Battlefield after you’ve completed the Black Lake Facility Escape Room.

Featuring cutting-edge revolutionary projections, the Black Lake Facility offers the only laser tag games in Singapore that utilizes moving CGI Projection-mapping around the entire game-environment to recreate an immersive experience.

Here, you will be immersed into a battlefield with interactive changeable combat simulations, and experience different “worlds” during gameplay where you will encounter aliens, monsters, and zombies. Strap on the harness, grab your laser-tag gun, and get ready to have a thrilling fight with all the enemies.

Go On A 4D Adventure

Do you love simulation rides at theme parks? Then you will enjoy the thrilling 4D simulation ride that features patented technology by Triotech at the Singapore Discovery Centre’s XD Theatre. Want to feel like a superhero and jump from skyscrapers, dive into a pool and hang from helicopters? Choose the breathtaking adventure of Sky Hunt. Or prefer to immerse yourself in a fantasy fairy tale? Try PINOCCHIO – A Modern Tale 5D as you ride on board of Pinocchio’s trusty hoverboard for a thrilling journey over the woods and the city, passing by the Land of Toys and Mangiafuoco’s puppet theater.

If you are prone to motion sickness or prefer something tamer for younger kids, head over to the iWERKS Theatre, a 344-seater cinema which shows the latest blockbuster movies in both 2D and 3D. Right now, the theatre is showing Disney’s Raya and The Last Dragon and Dragon Rider, based on the Awesome Clawsome March theme of dragons this March school holidays.

Take Part In AR Games

To further enhance your experience, you can download the mySDC app to create your own Time Travelling Avatar and explore Singapore’s history through the Lens of Time. Via this app, you will be able to immerse yourself in the historic events through magical portals and augmented reality games while experiencing first-hand what it would have been like to be there.

“The mySDC App is an interactive mobile application which accompanies visitors and enhances their experience as they journey through the Permanent Exhibits Gallery. Visitors can scan the AR code dotted around the gallery and immerse themselves in the historic events through magical portals and augmented reality games. It is like being teleported back in time to witness first-hand these significant events of our history,” adds Joseph.

Make your experience at the SDC even more enriching and fulfilling by downloading the app before you try any of the activities there!

More Activities To Expect In The Future

Planning to come back to the SDC again after going through all those fun activities? You will be glad to know that the SDC has planned more upcoming attractions for you. One to look out for is the Survival Village, which encompasses outdoor adventure learning and camping activities.

Also, according to Joseph, “the SDC will reopen with a refreshed lower gallery called “Sandbox” by the end of the year, which will focus on contemporary issues and how we continue to grow our resolve and guard against the fast-evolving threats, adapt to new challenges and create opportunities. Here, visitors will get to participate and co-create through group activities, discussions and AR components, in a test-bed environment that provokes action through purposeful play.”

SAFRA Mount Faber reopened its doors over the weekend of 24-25 Aug as an executive lifestyle club for NSmen. The out-of-office open house event was graced by guest of honour Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, senior minister of state for defence and president of SAFRA, who unveiled an art installation created by two NSmen featuring the letters NS to symbolise the importance of national service.

The “Positive Transformations” talk by inspirational speaker Dr William Tan saw a turnout of over 600 participants. It is part of the newly introduced SAFRA Executive Learning Series, where NSmen are encouraged to pick up new lifestyle and business skills. Other workshops held included lantern making, 3D artwork, as well as a student entrepreneurship challenge. Health and fitness buffs were also kept busy by the various activities lined up such as bollydancing, lindy hop, lyrical jazz, pop pilates and zumba.

The open house also saw families snap up $1 food and snack deals, and enjoying hours of free movie screenings. Live performances by Singapore Idol finalist Mathilda D’Silva and Sing Singapore runner-up Imelda Teo kept the ambience upbeat. A promotional SAFRA membership package was also launched, giving participants a 50 per cent cut and free NTUC vouchers worth up to $20.

Indeed, the promotional deal was what caught the eye of long-time member Christopher Tan, a regular at the club’s swimming pool. “My membership expires in three years, but I’m seriously considering renewing it in advance because of this,” he quipped.

Belle Ho, a dependent member for the past five years, praised the lifestyle concept of the club. She said the main draws are the new food and beverage attractions. “I believe F&B is important in attracting people. Based on what I’ve seen, the new choices are great. Not only food reasonably priced at the ‘middle class’ food court, it is a perfect place to come and chill out,” she said enthusiastically. The ‘middle class’ food court is the first urban food hall at a SAFRA club.

New amenities

With its slew of new amenities, the enhanced club aims to be a new hub for NSmen to socialise, network, pick up new skills and share business ideas. A new addition that is expected to be popular is the first-ever co-working space among the six existing SAFRA clubs: The Work Room @ SAFRA Mount Faber is a workspace equipped with high-speed internet and video-conferencing facilities for NSmen to do their work or conduct meetings.

There are also plenty of amenities and programmes for members who enjoy leisure and entertainment. The club now has weekly open mic sessions at the atrium as part of its newly introduced After7@MF entertainment programme. SAFRA Mount Faber also has a new integrated entertainment hub where NSmen can socialise over a game of darts at Forest5 Darts Café, or enjoy alfresco dining at the accompaniment of a daily live band in Turandot. Members can also sing their hearts out at the newly opened Party World KTV outlet.

The enhanced club also offers a wider variety of dining options, including the first urban food hall at a SAFRA club, with Food Paradise providing local and international cuisine. Other F&B outlets include Heavenly Wang, Subway and Summer Garden Restaurant.

There are also new facilities to complement existing ones like the EnergyOne gym, swimming pool, barbecue pits and bowling centre. They include a new dance studio for regular fitness programmes such as yoga, pilates and social dances. Kids of NSmen can also participate in an enhanced junior badminton programme coached by top players.

With so much going on, why wait? Go join the fun now!
