Mr Teh Tarik started as a humble little drinks stall in Far East Square in 2004. Office workers and casual diners alike would drop by for a teh tarik and other quick refreshments. Since then, this successful start-up has amassed a loyal following of diners who still patronise its stores for a daily cup of good teh.

Today, 20 years since its first shop, Mr Teh Tarik has 6 brands under its belt and over 26 outlets operating across our little red dot. Its latest venture, Mr Teh Tarik Cartel, has opened its doors at SAFRA’s Choa Chu Kang clubhouse, pivoting from its signature prata dishes to zi char-inspired offerings.

We pay a visit to this halal-certified casual eatery for a taste of its contemporary dishes and of course, an instant perk-me-up in the form of teh tarik!

As hearty as it gets

Chicken Wings

The first dish we had was a zi char staple – Har Cheong Gai Chicken Wings. Really, one can never go wrong with fermented shrimp paste. The experience is best described as positively auditory, as every bite comes with a pleasant crunch that is packed with a delicious piquancy. Mr Teh Tarik Cartel’s take on this ubiquitous dish is met with nods of approval from my fellow diners.

Salted Egg Prawns

The next dish, Salted Egg Fried Prawns, continues the trip down wok-hei lane. The chefs at Mr Teh Tarik Cartel have removed the prawn heads, promising a mess-free experience for diners who prefer to keep their hands clean. The coating takes centrestage with this one; the buttery sauce punctuates the dish with a rich and indulgent base that makes it a natural accompaniment to a bowl of rice. Additionally, the mild heat from the sliced red chilli makes a really nice finish!

Fish Head Curry

Concluding an already flavour-packed meal is a huge serving of Curry Fish Head. I’m one of those who consume only the gravy and vegetables in a fish head curry, but I loved the curry gravy in this variation by Mr Teh Tarik Cartel. It’s everything you want in a curry – aromatic, robust and hearty, with generous pieces of melt-in-your-mouth eggplant and ladyfinger. For those who enjoy a good fish head, there’s good news! My dining companions devoured the fish head (which they said was very succulent), wiping it clean – I’m not sure if there’s any higher praise than that.

Sadly, the belly has its limits. I do hope to try out its Steamed Fish the next time I’m here!

Mr Teh Tarik Cartel Drinks

To complete the experience, it is a must to try its eponymous drink – a chilled glass of Iced Mr Teh Tarik. The sweet-toothed will love it, but you can ask for siu dai if you prefer it that way. Truly, it’s the ultimate comfort drink, especially for those looking for a bit of a boost in the day. The Iced Teh Limau is instant energy in a cup, with a light tanginess that makes for a refreshing sip.

A refreshed look

Mr Teh Tarik Cartel Interior

Mr Teh Tarik Cartel stepped out of the box with this rendition, enlivening its established brand of over 20 years with aesthetic originality. The entire ceiling is adorned with hanging plants that beautifully harmonise with the greenery of Choa Chu Kang Park just outside, which serves as a vibrant backdrop. This, alongside panoramic windows, accentuates the dining experience with a glimpse of communal life at SAFRA.

Comfort food for all

Mr Teh Tarik Cartel Experience

You know the food is good when you leave with your bellies full, and our desire for a good nap is even stronger. Mr Teh Tarik Cartel offers a dining experience that is as heartwarming as it is budget-friendly, cementing itself as the epitome of a comfort food venue. Mr Teh Tarik Cartel is a refreshing culinary addition to SAFRA’s already extensive catalogue of food options.

Intrepid diners are often on the lookout for something that is novel, a dish so unimaginably inventive that it will leave them amazed by its pure ingenuity. One doesn’t have to look too far to find these semblances of culinary creativity – you can find them right here in Singapore.

To help you begin your search for the unusual, here are 7 wacky culinary fusions that are as unexpected as they are delicious!

Mentaiko Scallop by Jack’s Place

Scallop

Mentaiko mayonnaise is an elevated take on conventional mayonnaise, with a creamy base that is infused with seasoned pollock roe. The chefs at Jack’s Place thought it was a great idea to pair this indulgent condiment with scallops, albeit with an execution that is simply brilliant!

Scallops are generously topped with mentaiko mayonnaise, baked, then torched, adding a toasty and slightly crispy top to complement the scallop’s melt-in-the-mouth texture. The natural sweetness of the scallops is accentuated by mentaiko’s inherent savouriness, amplifying its succulence with a much-needed oomph!

SAFRA members enjoy 10% discount at Jack’s Place SAFRA Jurong and SAFRA Punggol. Find out more at safra.sg/amenities-offerings/jack’s-place

Cereal Hae Bee Hiam Fried Ice Cream by Keng Eng Kee Seafood (KEK)

KEK

While it may not be known for its desserts, Keng Eng Kee Seafood is not afraid to try some novel experimentation. Like really, who would have thought to pair hae bee hiam (spicy fried shrimp) with coconut ice-cream in a golden fried pastry?

The combination works beautifully though, as strange as it might sound. Just like how chocolate can be elevated with a pinch of salt, the coconut ice-cream is elevated to new heights with the crunchiness, saltiness and mild spiciness of dried shrimp, resulting in a mind-blowingly good confection that will leave you wondering, “How come no one thought of this before, ah?”

SAFRA members enjoy 10% off at KEK SAFRA Punggol and 15% off at KEK SAFRA Tampines. Visit safra.sg/amenities-offerings/kek-seafood to find out more.

Sambal Belachan Aglio Olio by Old Habits

Sambal Aglio

Saute some fresh chopped garlic, a drizzle of olive oil and some red pepper flakes with pasta noodles and voilà – you have yourself a classic pasta aglio olio.

While traditionalists may frown, modern culinarians like the Old Habits cafe at SAFRA Mount Faber are not afraid to inject a new twist into this classic Italian recipe. Instead of red pepper flakes, Old Habits combines the funkiness of shrimp paste and the tangy accents of sambal to enhance the dish with a fiery base, adding a new savoury intensity that breathes new life into this beloved pasta dish.

SAFRA members get 10% discount off all food and drinks at Old Habits. Go to safra.sg/amenities-offerings/old-habits to find out more.

Däs Pratwurst by Springleaf Prata

Pratawurst

In addition to its menu of Northern and Southern Indian delicacies, Springleaf Prata has a series of inventive prata dishes that are inspired by international cuisine. Updated every year, its Ultimate Series features the likes of Plaster Blaster, a prata intended to emulate the buttery creaminess of Eggs Benedict, and the whimsically named Murtaburger, a play on the famous Ramly burger!

Nothing tops the list off quite like its 2020 instalment – the Däs Pratwurst. Coated with currywurst sauce, this German-inspired fusion comes with plenty of chicken sausage pieces, sauerkraut and topped with a light sprinkle of aromatic curry powder. And in true Springleaf Prata fashion, the dish is accompanied with a serving of their signature curry gravy.

SAFRA members enjoy 10% off at Springleaf Prata. For more details, visit safra.sg/amenities-offerings/springleaf-prata-place

Mysterious Prawn Noodle with Fried Mealworms by Takagi Ramen

Prawn Noodles

Takagi Ramen brings together two classic noodle dishes – prawn mee and Japanese ramen – with its Halloween special, Mysterious Prawn Noodle Soup. With punchy prawn-based broth, this ramen variant is served with chewy noodles and juicy prawn slices, delivering a fusion of flavour from both Singapore and Japan! And you’re in for a surprise – each bowl comes with deep-fried mealworms for that textural crunch!

This mind-boggling creation is considered relatively tame for Takagi Ramen’s standards, given that they have introduced nuttier inventions before! Cockles Milk Tea: need we say more?

SAFRA members enjoy 10% off at Takagi Ramen at Staytion Lifestyle Centre. You can find more about the promotion at safra.sg/promotions/staytion-dhobyghaut

Get a facial, grab a sandwich and more – find out what else is on offer with discounts for SAFRA members at Staytion Lifestyle Centre
.

Ribena Wings by Working Title

Ribena Wings

Sure, you might grab a few chicken wings alongside a cup of refreshingly sweet Ribena. But to put them together? The chefs at Working Title have reduced the concentrated Ribena cordial into a viscous, sweet glaze and coated their seasoned wings with this sticky sauce, surprising diners with a piquant mix of tanginess and honeyed sweetness. It’s the perfect alternative to Korean fried chicken, without the spiciness.

Working Title is at Lasalle College of the Arts, 1 McNally Street, Block D, #01-01, Singapore 187490; Tel: 9436 2482

Gula Melaka Salted Egg Cake by Baker’s Brew

Gula Melaka Salted Egg Cake

Gula melaka (palm sugar) is not as sweet as granulated sugar, with a deeply complex flavour that can be best described as a smoky butterscotch-like tang. Given its robust nature, it is rare to find another flavour that pairs nicely with gula melaka.

Baker’s Brew has possibly cracked the code by adding salted egg! Coated in a fluffy salted egg and gula melaka cream, this vanilla sponge cake answers the question, “What if?” beautifully, responding with a decadent dessert that is addictively salty-sweet.

Bakers Brew is at various locations around Singpore, including Great World, Jem and Causeway Point.

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop: A Nostalgic Medley Of Wok-Hei & Kopi https://nsman.safra.sg/juwei-old-nanyang-coffee-shop-a-nostalgic-medley-of-wok-hei-kopi/ Thu, 24 Oct 2024 09:00:11 +0000 https://nsman.safra.sg/?p=28755 “Uncle, one teh-peng siew dai and a whole lot of wok-hei please!”

The post JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop: A Nostalgic Medley Of Wok-Hei & Kopi appeared first on eNSMAN.

When it comes to dining, SAFRA@29 Carpenter Street had seen a slew of rebranding initiatives before settling on the bustling coffee shop that we see today. “This is a manifestation of the many challenging lessons that we have learnt along the way,” says Kennie Liu, the co-founder of this dining outlet, as well as the JUwei brand that it is housed under.

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop is an ode to the nostalgia of kopitiams of yesteryear, along with an update to the old-school cuisine with modern touches. We got to sample an array of Nanyang-inspired dishes, taking us on a culinary adventure back in time.

Unexpectedly shiok!

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop Nasi Lemak

I would never have thought that this modern eatery would produce a Nasi Lemak that is so good!

Presented on a miniature charcuterie board, the dish comes with a generous serving of fried peanuts and fried ikan bilis, achar, a curried veggie stew as well as an entire fried chicken leg that is topped with crispy bits. While the rice is predictably fragrant (as one would expect of Nasi Lemak), the chicken is truly the star of the show. Incredibly tender on the inside while retaining a satisfying crunch when you bite into the skin, the chicken leg is masterfully cooked to a delicious satisfaction. The sambal chilli does its job well to complement the entire dish with a well-rounded fiesta of flavours. If you choose to order this, I strongly recommend sharing it as the portion size is huge!

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop Char Kway Teow

The Penang Fried Kway Teow is the quintessential comfort food for many – noodles are well-seasoned and springy, and the dish is liberally mixed with prawns, bean sprouts and chunks of lap cheong (Chinese sausage).

Though I might be biased – the dish comes with plenty of fried bits of pork lard – which I cannot stress enough, LOVE! They add a lovely crunch alongside a burst of fatty saltiness. Of course, you can always request that they omit this addition (but why?) when ordering.

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop KL Hokkien Mee

Its Kuala Lumpur (KL) Hokkien Mee is quite unlike our local variant. This plate of noodles is doused in a thick, dark soy-based broth that is as sweet as it is savoury. If you’re looking for a quick, belly-filling meal, this is definitely it!

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop Prawn Noodles

JUwei’s Prawn Noodles brims with umami undertones that are complemented with a delicate sweetness. If you prefer a lighter and soupier dish, you will definitely enjoy this one!

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop Curry Cheong Fun

As for its Roast Pork Curry Cheong Fun, I enjoyed the unique interplay of the spiced flavours from the curry, and the caramelised notes from the sweet sauce.

Everyday comforts

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop Kaya Toast and drinks

It wouldn’t be right to write about a kopi shop without actually touching on the kopi, would it? But I’m more of a teh tarik-peng kind of guy, and JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop doesn’t disappoint. The ice-cold beverage is creamy, delicately sweet and a great reprieve from our notoriously humid weather.

Like wine and cheese, a cup of teh or kopi shares a beautiful chemistry with a plate of kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs. JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop stays true to this symbiotic love, albeit with a twist, substituting the toast with bite-size youtiao. The novelty is interesting – the richness of the pandan-infused kaya dip adds a nice contrast and makes this dish a great mini sharing platter. Of course, if you’re more of a traditionalist, they also have the Kaya Toast Set, which comes with two soft-boiled eggs.

And if you’re feeling sleepy, the Kopi Tarik is definitely the fuel you need! I love how ‘gao’ (strong) this beverage is, though I might ask for a less sweet (siew dai) version the next time I drop by. For the more intrepid diner, make sure to try its Hor Ka Sai Kopi, a robust blend of kopi, condensed milk and milo!

A re-modernised time capsule

Food at JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop

This review notwithstanding, the crowd size alone is a testament to the success of this quaint eatery. We could barely find an empty table upon our arrival! Even after we were done, there were still customers strolling in way past the peak lunch period looking to have a casual hang out with their friends.

JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop’s familiar culinary repertoire will strike a chord with diners who simply desire food that is wholesome, unpretentious and timeless. More importantly, it is a great spot for midnight revellers searching for a supper food spot after a night of dancing and alcohol-bingeing, given that it operates all the way till 2am.

I’m excited to see what other dishes JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop has in store for us next!

From nasi padang and char kway teow to pho and ramen, many cities in the region have certainly become known for their own signature gourmet offering. Though there may be passionate debate among some quarters over the origins of popular and much loved dishes, foodies in general can at least agree when something is truly delicious.

Here are some destinations for when the tastebuds dictate your vacation:

If you love char kway teow… head to Penang, Malaysia

Char Kway Teow in Penang, Malaysia

Essentially a stir-fried flat rice noodle dish, the Penang version of char kway teow incorporates prawns, blood cockles, lap cheong (Chinese sausage), eggs – traditionally, duck eggs – bean sprouts, and chives, in a soy sauce-based seasoning mix. Besides the ingredients, many fans say that the X factor that makes or breaks a good Penang char kway teow is the “wok hei” – the elusive charred and smoky aroma from stir-frying the noodles over very high heat in a well-seasoned Chinese wok.

When in Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Penang, get your fix at these Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed eateries: Siam Road Char Koay Teow (82 Jalan Siam, George Town 10400) and Penang Road Famous Jin Kor Char Kuey Teow (Joo Hooi Cafe, 475 Jalan Penang, George Town 10000), which has been in business for 40 years. Both stalls accept cash payment only.

Accommodations-wise, consider Hard Rock Hotel Penang, where SAFRA members enjoy 15% off best available rates and room-only deals.

If you love lechon… head to Cebu, the Philippines

Lechon in Cebu, the Philippines

A must-have at Filipino feasts – to celebrate birthdays, weddings and more – lechon is a whole pig spit-roasted over charcoal for hours. When done right, the meat is rendered tender and succulent with a crispy skin. Unlike the Luzon version – the Philippines capital, Manila, is located on the island – the Cebu lechon is made from pigs stuffed with lemongrass, garlic, onion, salt and chilli, and the dish is eaten without a dipping sauce.

For some of the best lechon in Cebu, head to Apo Ni Bebie in Carcar City. The eatery was named the province’s best lechonero in August. For a modern twist that’s boneless, head to Cebu Original Lechon Belly, which offers the tiyan (belly) cut prepared the traditional way.

Stay close to the best lechon spots by booking through Agoda, where SAFRA members get 8% off on accommodations worldwide.

If you love pho… head to Hanoi, Vietnam

Pho in Hanoi, Vietnam

Said to have originated from the province of Nam Dinh, pho is arguably Vietnam’s most famous culinary export and the capital Hanoi, its spiritual home. A staple breakfast dish, it’s made by ladling boiling broth over a bed of soft rice noodles and sliced meat, finishing with a topping of chopped herbs and chives. Each diner will then be able to customise their bowl with squeezes of lemon, slices of red chilli, sprigs of basil, and portions of of hoisin sauce. Hanoi pho, compared to its southern counterpart, is clearer and simpler, and served with lesser condiments.

While in the capital, try the pho bo (beef pho) at Pho Gia Truyen (49 Bat Dan Street, Cua Dong Ward) in the Hoan Kiem district – add a crispy quay (fried dough stick) – and the chicken pho at Pho Ga Nguyet (5B Phu Doan Street, Hang Trong Ward, Hoan Kiem District). Pro tip: The owner of Pho Ga Nguyet has reportedly divulged that the broth is at its best around 8pm, some 16 hours from the time it would have started simmering at 4am.

If you love nasi padang… head to Jakarta, Indonesia

Nasi Padang in Jakarta, Indonesia

Nasi padang, one of the most popular local foods in Indonesia and the neighbouring countries, is actually a style of eating where steamed rice is served with a vast selection of dishes. There’s usually a plethora to choose from, showcasing the specialities and cooking styles of the various regions.

Head to Sari Indah to try traditional padang dishes in a contemporary setting. Its grilled chicken and ayam pop (skinless chicken fried in coconut oil) are well regarded, as is its rendition of gulai daun ubi tumbuk (pounded cassava leaves in coconut milk stew). For a taste of nasi padang in a smaller, independent establishment, head to Rumah Makan Surya in Benhil. The must-try here is the gulai otak (cow’s brain in coconut milk curry) – it might not be for everyone, but it tastes great, apparently.

Be prepared to be served “hidang” style, where a selection of small portions of possibly dozens of dishes is brought and stacked at the centre of your table. You can then choose to eat what you desire and pay only for what you consume.

If you love khao soi… head to Chiang Mai, Thailand

Khao Soi in Chiang Mai, Thailand

A great introduction to Northern Thai cuisine, khao soi features egg noodles in a curry broth that’s usually made with chicken, lamb, beef or pork, and topped with crispy fried noodles. It is served with preserved vegetables, fresh shallots and some roasted chilli. Khao soi is believed to have originated among Chinese Muslim communities in southern China. The dish crossed the border into Myanmar before it landed in Thailand.

Khao Soi Islam (24 Charoen Prathet Rd, Chang Khlan Sub-district, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100), located close to the mosque and Worarot Market just outside the old city, offers a halal version with broth made with beef. Lightly seasoned and comparatively milder, this version is said to closely resemble the early Burmese rendition. Insider tip: When at Khao Soi Islam, try the chicken or goat biryani, both of which are highly rated by foodies.

Khao Soi Lung Prakit Kad Kom (53 Suriyawong 5 Rd, Tambon Hai Ya, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100) – or Khao Soi Netflix as the eatery became known as after it was popularised by the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil – usually boasts a long line of diners waiting for their fix. Serving khao soi for over 40 years, the signature dish at this Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed stall is the beef khao soi.

Vegans can get their fix at the reputable Goodsouls Kitchen, where tofu and potatoes feature in place of meat.

Research and plan your own khao soi trail with AIRSIM data. SAFRA members enjoy 15% off the AIRSIM Prepaid Card.

If you love ramen… head to Tokyo, Japan

Ramen in Tokyo, Japan

This Japanese wheat noodle soup, with its myriad regional variations, commonly features soy sauce or miso-based broth, and toppings such as chashu (sliced pork), menma (bamboo shoot), spring onion and a semi-runny egg.

For traditional Tokyo-style noodles, head to Kiraku (2 Chome-17-6 Dogenzaka, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0043) in Shibuya, which has been in business since 1952. Try the classic chukamen. With its soy sauce-based broth, the flat noodles are topped with bean sprouts, nitamago (egg) and chashu slices. For something more innovative, consider Michelin Bib Gourmand-rated Yakumo (3-6-15 Higashiyama, Meguro), famous for its wonton ramen. The dish has two types of wonton: one with pork and ginger; the other features shrimp. To enjoy both types, order the special Tokusei ramen. Soup-wise, you can choose between the “white dashi”, made with white soy sauce, and “black dashi”, which is made using rich, dark soy sauce. Or, pick “mix”.

While in Tokyo, book your tickets for other adventures and experiences through Klook, where SAFRA members enjoy 5% off sitewide.
