Sports Camp for Kids – SAFRA Choa Chu Kang

Celebrate the thrill of the Olympics while building bonds forged by a shared love for sports! This 2-day holiday camp seeks to emulate this very spirit, with a series of casual competitive games for your young would-be Olympians to make their marks. 

Participants will get to be part of a very special Kids’ Olympian Games, where they will start things off with a thematic Opening Ceremony, followed by floorball and water polo games that conclude with a Victory Ceremony. At this camp by the Lion City Sailors (LCS) Football Academy, your young football fans will take part in a plethora of football-centric activities that not only impart the necessary technical skills, but also help promote a friendly competitive spirit that is needed for them to build a solid camaraderie with their teammates. Little Marco The Explorer – SAFRA Jurong & SAFRA Yishun

Let your kids get a taste of outdoor camping activities at SAFRA Jurong and SAFRA Yishun!

At SAFRA Yishun from 4 to 5 December, your kids will get to navigate a 200m Outdoor Obstacle Course at the SAFRA Adventure Sports Centre, while in the Amazing Race, Yishun Park Edition, they will learn to locate landmarks, find directions, and complete mini tasks at each checkpoint. Balloon Car Racing will see the kids create racing cars from recycled materials and compete in friendly races.

Over at SAFRA Jurong from 7 to 8 December, camp programme highlights include X-Shot Tag – Shooting Game with Targets and Capturing of Team Flag. The X-Shot Tag game will require the children to demonstrate their teamwork and strategic thinking, while Water Rafting will teach them how to create a raft that will survive deep ocean sailing.

On the menu, you’ll find the must-try Thai tea avalanche bingsu ($19.80), a decadent treat featuring Thai milk tea-flavoured snow ice, fresh biscuit crumble, whipped cream cheese, and Thai tea gelato. You can add grass jelly, sweet condensed milk, and extra Thai tea sauce to take it up a notch. The anticipation of a fiesta of joy is in the air, as revellers throng the streets and homes to celebrate the beloved Festival of Lights, better known as Deepavali or Diwali, which falls on 31 October this year.  Just imagine – a lavish spread of mouthwatering delicacies are laid before you as the entire home is brightened up by the laughs shared between loved ones as they catch up and exchange stories and gossip. 

While you relish in the jubilance of the occasion, it is also important to remember the symbolisms behind Deepavali and the message of unity that it is intended to convey. We speak to four excited individuals who share more about the introspective significance of the holiday!

Personally, I think that most people in Singapore actually understand what Deepavali is intended to represent – the comradeship that we thrive on, the appreciation of varied cultures that is our society’s bedrock and the simple joys that come with being amongst friends and family. It’s really nice to see friends of other races partaking in the celebrations, adorned in traditional Indian festive wear that really speaks of Singapore’s uniqueness as a multiracial nation! 

Like every Deepavali, I’ll visit my parents before heading out to various family gatherings to really just catch up with my uncles, aunties, cousins and extended family members. Wishing all Singaporeans a Happy Deepavali!

Contrary to what some may assume about the festival, Deepavali is not just about the food and commemorative ornaments. Though I must say, they do play a huge role in livening up the celebratory ambience!

Without going too much into it, the Festival of Lights is often seen as the representation of the perennial fight between good and evil. Some may have heard of the legend of the legendary hero Rama, the conqueror of the demon king, Ravana. Some speculate that our oil lamps illuminate his victory. While there are many other interpretations, the occasion is our way of sharing prosperity, goodness and joy with our neighbours and loved ones. If anything, Deepavali is also a great way to remind everyone of the virtue of religious harmony, and that there is room to learn more about and celebrate our diverse culture!

Get ready for a Deepavali trivia bomb! 

Interesting fact – Deepavali is not the Tamil New Year, which is a totally different festival. Tamil New Year  falls on 14 April every year. Deepavali, on the other hand, stands for ‘Festival Of Lights’. Its meaning lies in the triumph of good over evil, symbolised by the victory of Lord Krishna over demon king Narakasuran.

The date of Deepavali also varies each year, depending on the Hindu calendar. It’s usually celebrated during the month of Karthigai (October to November).

Many think that kolam, the intricate designs created with coloured powders or rice flour, is just a decorative element. However, its significance is greater than that. It serves as an invitation to the goddess, Lakshmi, who is believed to bring prosperity and wealth. The designs are believed to attract positive energy into the home. The rice flour used in kolam becomes food for ants, emphasising on the principle of ‘Jeeva Karunyam’ which means compassion to all living beings.

The same applies to our lamps – they are not solely used for lighting but also intended to signify knowledge and enlightenment. Lighting them is believed to dispel darkness and ignorance.

I really look forward to the gatherings with family, relatives and friends. It’s always fun to host others or be invited to celebrate Deepavali together. Sharing meals, playing with sparklers, singing and dancing together brings so much happiness during this festive occasion. I especially like to share the sweets and snacks (laddoo and murukku) that my mum makes every year with my non-Hindu friends to spread the joy of Deepavali to everyone.

Time really flies, doesn’t it? 

Too often are we occupied by the present hustle that we forget to live life as it should be! Deepavali grounds me to this sobering fact, that life is not just all work; there is plenty of room to unwind and reconnect with ourselves as well as with those who have stood by us since the start of our journeys. The occasion, its religious significance aside, is also a symbolic inauguration of a new year, where we celebrate new opportunities, experiences and joys! In a way, it signifies the light at the end of every tunnel, and that we simply have to look for it to navigate our life’s obstacles. At times, it also reminds me of the small yet precious moments of unity during my army days, when people of all races would come together to share a simple spread. 

Like many of my fellow festive celebrants, I’m just delighted to have the opportunity to spend time with those I love. Happy Deepavali friends!

Watch films that support the community

You’re bumping shoulders in the darkness while sharing a bucket of popcorn – watching movies together can indeed be a romantic date idea. But what if you could choose films that not only entertain but also contribute to a meaningful cause? Supporting community-focused films can be a rewarding experience in more ways than one.

For example, the upcoming Mental Health Film Festival (7-10 November) promotes understanding of mental health issues.

Boost literacy through storytelling

Do you have an affinity with children and enjoy reading? Telling stories to children while on a date can be a heartwarming and enriching experience. Join various volunteer-led storytelling programmes in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil across our public libraries.

If you can commit to weekly sessions, then consider supporting the kidsREAD programme in schools, clubs and low-income homes. Or become a befriender at New Life Stories, where you can engage children with incarcerated parents through storytelling and crafts. Together, you can make a worthwhile impact on the next generation on many levels.

Foster inclusion via sports

Or perhaps you’re a sporty couple who sweats it out together regularly. Why not extend your sportsmanship to differently-abled individuals? Sign up as a Sports Buddy with SportsCares’ Play-Ability programme and help persons with disabilities and special needs improve their physical and mental health through sports from badminton to soundball.

Another avenue where your love for sports can benefit others is with Special Olympics Singapore. The first Special Olympics World Summer Games were held in 1968 for athletes with intellectual disabilities. With the next one in March 2025 in Turin, Italy, our special athletes are ramping up their training, and swimming volunteers are needed!

Improve community spaces and living conditions

We all have a responsibility to our environment, but saying it isn’t enough. To make your next date extra impactful, team up to clean up your neighbourhood, parks or beaches. You can meet up with the Singapore chapter of Trash Hero or simply borrow litter-picking tools from CleanPod and start picking up trash in your community.

And for those little ones keen on art, Canvas Ark’s new term will have them exploring their creative side while honing essential skills.

SAFRA eSports Fiesta 2024

Gamers, it’s time to gear up for one of the most exciting eSports events of the year – SAFRA eSports Fiesta 2024! If you and your squad are up for the challenge, this is your chance to compete in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Tournament and grab a share of the $6,000 cash prize pool. The qualifiers will take place across five SAFRA clubs, with the top 4 teams from each location advancing to the Grand Finals at SAFRA Yishun on 10 November 2024.

There’s room for 16 teams at each SAFRA club, so whether you’re a seasoned player or just want to put your gaming skills to the test, form your team, practise your strategy, and prepare for battle!

Registration is free for SAFRA Tech Club members, while SAFRA members can sign up at $10 per team and non-members at $20 per team. The top team at each club during the Qualifiers will walk away with $500, and the Grand Champion can bag a whopping $1,500.

SAFRA Halloween Events 2024

Get into the Halloween spirit with a series of fun and spooky events at SAFRA clubs this October! On 12 and 13 October, head to SAFRA Yishun for Sunset Terror, where you can take part in a Scare-venger Hunt; shoot your way out of the Indoor Air Weapons Range in our Phantom Range activity; and form a team to survive Riddles of the Restless, where you explore the indoor bouldering space, solve puzzles and find the exit together. SAFRA members can also come dressed in your scary best, snap a photo at the Photo Boo-th and post your photo on SAFRA Yishun’s Facebook page as a comment to join the best-dressed contest!

The following week, SAFRA Jurong has Spooks & Screams on 19 and 20 October, featuring an escape room, Eerie-sistible DIY Treats, a Trick or Treat Egg Hunt, magic show and other stage activities to keep the whole clan entertained.
